Hello, I bought this on a whim and like it very much. I’d be keen to know all about it if anyone can help? There is a faint number on the back; 1430.

The 1430 on the back refers to the caliber, or movement.

(Pic from https://urdelar.se/ )

It looks like a gold plated Seamaster quartz from the mid 1980s, possibly a reference 196.0983

The numer 1430 represent the caliber of the watch (type of mechanism). As you seen a quartz watch.
To get more info you will have to open it and see the serial number from inside and the case back reference.

My wife says I can never wear it because I am a dark suit and black shoes kind of guy. Can you give me an idea of what it is worth and where best to sell it?

I thought it works quite well with a suit. Just change the strap to a black one.

Tell your wife that you don't tell her what jewelry to wear and she doesn't tell you what watch to wear. 😗

Generally speaking, unless one's wife buys you the watch, she is much less likely to like it.
