Useless link. A paywall or info harvesting. I do not want to create an account to read an article.

Wish we could go back to a manufacturing economy where one gets physical things locally made with sustainable materials that last. Quality over quantity.

This mis valuing of information for entertainment is frustrating. Especially when one is not the target demographic.

Bring back the newspaper city desk and local reporting. Return the editorials to the proper section.

It's an intense movie (in the sense that it's not-relaxing) for certain, but that's the point. It's a good movie.

Perhaps when I get through "Banshees Of Inisherin", having finished "Emily The Criminal", perhaps I'll give it another go.

I really don’t understand your post here. From your comment about bringing back printed paper (which still exists), we would seem to agree that one has to pay to enjoy the reporting of journalists (in this case), or music, movies, etc.
It was my perception that NYT offered a few (5?) free articles to users each month, but may be not.

On the other hand, the fact that you have not subscribed to even the Tier 1 level of OF membership leads me to believe that you rather expect everything to be free so, sorry to tell you but there is no free meal. Either you pay or YOU are the product. 😒
I am doing my part as I have a subscription and do get BOTH online and printed copies. To each their own. 😗

It’s unfortunately not the case (I also can’t read it without signing up/logging in etc). Thankfully the <city-where-I-live>Times is free to read online…however, it is in not in English 😁

This might work. I copied the link as a gift.

The Unlikely New TikTok Influencers: Old-School Watch Dealers https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/01/...hmzqvnzSmvz1GMGt_aW_4QQ1HFZMkIA6HG_rhGXKTGcBI

I also like paying for the Times as I think of it as a cheap way to support Democracy.

As far as the article goes, it gave a good sense of what it's like living in a different world. Nice to not read real news about another mass shooting or fugative on the loose or Santos.

Yeah I am a cheapscape. I have been online since 1977 so I got spoiled as a kid. Especially when one was acquainted with Lee Felsenstien. 'Information wants to be free.' was one of his motto's. Used to have some of his manifestos.

Paying for stuff on line feels like paying for a can of air. A least when one pays for a can of air, they still get the can.

It is not that I do not mind paying for something physical. (Like a Val-72 balance complete.) And the household does pay for the local paper which is more of a news aggregator these days. Newspapers now cost over 100 bucks a quarter. Granted there is inflation. It is more mismanagement than anything else. Like banks newspapers need to be LOCALLY owned, not part of some global multinational corp running stock scams and ponzi schemes. Most papers are run by philanthropists and failed politicians anyway. Would not have it any other way but they need to provide LOCAL employment.

I think what I object to is to have to come up with yet another password, and to create yet another burner account for the registration to go to to impulse read an article which is a fluff piece.

Ever wonder why there was a newspaper in the old western town? They were outlaws (Outside the law) pirating the popular works of European (and American authors who sole well in Europe) Like Dickens, Poe Tennyson etc. The paper was also a good source of lead as well since the 'Matrix Stereotypes' were re cast as needed. If one looks closely the reporter was as often the bad guy as was the sheriff when attending the showdown at high noon. Samuel Clemens and W.R. Hearst were no saints.

My real weakness was books. I used to say I was not a watch collector. I was a book collector who bought books about watches.

And OF is anything but free, given the amount of time I spend here generating content and the number of images I posted. I could spend that time building my own blogs. And just had to pay my own hosting fees a few weeks ago, which put me in a ratty mood as I wanted to spend that money on watch parts.

OF has to pay to host the massive amount of hi-res images everyone is posting.

For hosting a blog, I ditched my traditional monolithic host long ago. You don't need a CMS like Wordpress and a PHP database for a blog. Move your domains to Google domains and host for free with Netlify or similar.

Having finally watched it I thought those negotiations were pretty tame, both parties knew the market and very little blood was spilt. Visit India as a tourist and debate the price of a $2 tuktuk ride for five minutes and you’ll know what haggling really looks like!

I share your sentiment about the evolving landscape of media and information. It's a bit disheartening to see the content behind paywalls, especially when you're just seeking knowledge. Remember the good old days of local newspapers and solid reporting? Those were simpler times.Speaking of the digital world, it's fascinating how platforms like TikTok have changed the game. If you're looking to give your TikTok account a boost, you might want to check out https://socialfollowersfree.com/. I stumbled upon it while exploring ways to enhance my own social media presence.
