My horological resolution for 2019 was a very modest goal, that I’ve broken in the first month of the year. 2019 was to be a year I slow my pace and only add my last two grails, the Patek Aguanant 5164 and Grand Seiko Snowflake (1st edition). In order to afford the Patek, I would need to sale a few pieces which I have been actively doing, albeit a very slow process thus far. On Wednesday I had to run an errand a couple of hours away from my house, which also happens to be where my nearest Rolex and Omega Boutique are located. I decided I would just pop my head into both location for “a look”. I was in and out of Omega quickly and headed to Rolex next. When I arrived, the salesman greeted me and asked if I was looking for anything in particular, which I replied do you have any sports models in stock? I don’t remember if the gentleman ever said no, but something to the nature of “we only receive a few pieces per year and not sure when they would receive the next shipment”. He then asked me if I would like to look at the Sea Dweller. Being that I hadn’t handled one in person I said, sure why not. I looked the watch over for about 5 mins, but it wasn’t love at first sight which I told the salesman. Not sure if they were waiting on my answer, but soon as I said that another salesman appeared and mumbled something to his colleague and then “I think I have a surprised for you” and out comes this black & blue beauty pictured below. I put it on my wrist and instantly said I will take it. Resolution Broken! I really love the watch but now I have a dilemma. Do I keep it knowing it wasn’t part of the plan for 2019? A portion of the money used was part of the funds set aside for the Patek. Or do I sell it and add a nice little chunk to the Patek fund? I guess this would be considered first world problems and either solution would be considered a win by me.
You weak, weak man Beautiful watch...I'm jealous. Maybe wear it for a while and see if you want to keep it. If not, sell it to get closer to that Patek you want. BTW, which model Patek?
I’m out of the Patek loop. Way out. Can you still get a Travel Time for 31,999usd?? Lol I’m guessing no way jose
Maybe if you have a long history with an AD, but I’ve heard the waiting list is 5-10 yrs. I see the same grey market dealers, selling them time and time again.
Killer watch, specially since there are end of production rumors. Wear the hell out it and stop overthinking it, great watch with a suit or casual. I love mine.
Your first misstep was to resolve not to buy watches. Second mistake (and of course, this is my opinion, but let's have some fun) is to buy modern. If your sights were on vintage, then your options are way smaller and it's much harder to "just pick something up". As a side note, Ive heard that vintage subs (5512, 5513, etc) were a lot easier to find that good speedies . So I set an alert in the watchrecon app for both. In a month, I had about 25 sub alerts, and only one speedy alert. But maybe my reality reflects my interests. Anyway, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_the_Bleep_Do_We_Know!?
Keep it you are one lucky porky to find that watch. I would wait till the basel world and see what rolex will offer and who knows the value of that watch might be higher than what it is now. But Il keep mine this is my grail piece.
Oh fortunate mortal, keep the nice Batman the gods graced you with. Do not risk their anger by returning it. It is a worthy robust and rare piece that will serve you well.
Over the last few days I’ve gathered all my “significant” pieces to access the state of my collection. I’ve realized that I would have to give up some truly wonderful watches, to include Batman to get anywhere near the funds required for the Patek. At the same time leaving 3-4 big gaps in my watch box and potentially taking a major financial hit on one of my vintage Speedmasters by selling it. I’ve overhauled my 2019 plans, it now includes Batman and the Snowflake. Now that I have a relationship with my local Rolex Boutique, maybe I will get a call for some of the other sought after models (A fellow can dream right). Here’s to 2019 gentlemen.
