new vintage omega

I just inherited this watch from my Grandfather (he was in the jewelry business and this was a leftover from his store). This is my first vintage watch and I'm enjoying researching the history. I'm hoping someone can help me verify this is an early 1950s era. Also, I would appreciate any other info anyone can give. i.e., what is the model name?

Nice watch in a lovely condition. You may already realise this but it is solid gold, is there anything on the other side of the caseback? A photo of the crown may also be useful though these are often changed during service.
There are a few places online where you can find the manufacture date by serial numbers and they suggest it was made in 1952.
Looking at the spacing between the Omega writing and applied logo on the dial I do wonder if the dial has been repainted at some time in the past. This does reduce value from a collector perspective.

Thank you. Yes, I was happy to see it was 18k after opening the caseback. There are no markings on the outer side of the caseback. I will work on getting a clear photo of the crown.

I guessed as much, this means it was cased in the country it was sold in to reduce import duties.

No particular model name, most likely from about 1953 based on the serial number. The cal 266 movement is a member of a very successful series of 30mm movements used by Omega for more than 20 years. There is a long thread about watches with these movements that may interest you:

As suggested above, the dial has been repainted at some point, probably because the original printing or finish had become degraded.

How did you arrive at that conclusion???

Which conclusion - unmarked because otherwise the OP would have included a pic of the caseback if it showed a hippocampus or other markings. From that i added 2 + 2 and made 5 it seems.

You are correct, the Omega markings give that part away as well as the Swiss made etc, guess I was writing without thinking !

You're right that there should be two external markings; these are most often found on the rear of the lugs however, not on the caseback. I think I see a clear mark at the bottom of the top right lug on the first picture and (possibly) just the shadow of one on the lower left one.

I had not seen that before but there is definitely a mark on the lug.

What is the number inside the hammer head symbol ( resolution isnt good enough for me to ascertain the number)

if you know this, then you can find out who made the case

desmond has a list of all the case makers that omega used ( mainly for constellation models) but there will be overlaps with other models

It's "170". Listed as Cédex, Charles Dubois SA. Le Locle. 25.11.1947. 20.01.1987
