Hello all,

New member who just started his vintage Omega journey. Bought these two (nice) pieces in my opinion but would love the feedback from other enthousiast. Willing to study and start collecting!

Regards,

Alexander

Welcome Alexander!

It is generally best to ask for input before you buy. The vintage market can be tricky. The dial on the hand winder has been repainted, and it looks to be in need of a movement service judging by the position of the regulator. Notice the pointer is all the way over to the A.

It is a little hard to tell from the image, but the font looks a little heavy and uneven on the Cosmic. It is a little hard to tell from the pictures, it could be 100% OK.

Many thanks for the reply, yes the seller did tell me about the repaint so I am aware. As for service its quite normal? To be honest, I paid around 900 euro for both pieces and for me it seems fair but again just started! About the Cosmic, here is a better picture;

Welcome Alexander. You already know about the bullseye- it’s a fun looking watch even though it has lost its original dial finish. Generally that’s a negative in the collector world but if you know going in and are happy with the way it looks- and don’t pay collector values- then you went in eyes open.
The cosmic looked funny in the first pic (agree with Wag about line weights) but looks better in the second pic. Still on the fence about the “Automatic” font but there were so many variants with the Cosmic line and not all were perfect.

There is much to learn about spotting issues with vintage watches and some wonderful threads here about the topic.

Good luck and welcome to the sickness.

As for your question on servicing- you have to assume every used watch you buy will need to be serviced- it’s not a matter of if but when. Unless a seller can show you a receipt from a reputable watchmaker (not “we have a guy”) assume it will need to be serviced even if it’s running well.

Think of it like buying a used car with 60k/miles+ on the clock and the seller has no service history. You have no clue what they did in terms of service- they claim they changed the “fluids” regularly, but was that just the oil? It “runs” well, but you have no point of reference on the service life. So first stop is your mechanic to have everything changed, all bearings lubed, full check-up, etc.

Watches can “run” perfectly long past their recommended service intervals but the oils and greases have long since dried up and are running metal on metal/jewel. If you wear it occasionally you could get away with a decade more before it stops running. But if you plan to wear them daily, better sooner than later.

Find a local watchmaker (don’t take it to your local jeweler- they will farm it out to a watchmaker and upcharge you for it) and build a relationship with them. If you don’t have one near you, there are many who you can ship them to.

With this purchase, you have joined the "Cosmic Club"

Now I would read this entire thread and look at the various examples- and you can decide how yours stacks up!
Welcome and enjoy your watches!

Unfortunately I think the Cosmic has also been redialed.
It may not matter, but you’ve paid a newbie tax on these (don’t worry, it happens to most of us) and overpaid.

Indeed, I think newbie tax is almost impossible to avoid . It is easy to get «hooked» on a particular watch, and then it’s difficult to see it objectively.

Well first many thanks already for the more expert advice, for me these are still 'daily use' watches so for my eyes they look appealing and fit my style. So maybe a good redial for me!

These are not pristine collector's pieces, but great watches to be worn and enjoyed! Wear in good health. 👍

Welcome Alexander, aside from the warm reception to the hobby, I believe others have said much of what needed to be said.

It is part of the process but you have joined the right group to make sure you get inputs and advice to make this hobby an enjoyable experience.

An important POV is that you need to like your watches and wear them with health... We will give our opinions and insights, but you wear your watches, so enjoy them!

For the service, you might want to share your location so people can recommend watchmakers

Welcome to the hobby! It’s highly recommended that all new members assign a Power of Attorney, and get used to the idea of taking pictures of your watches in front of any interesting backdrop
