Ok, ok, I'm drooling already just reading this thread! I am not privileged enough to have a Glenfiddich 19 at home, but I did get this for a birthday gift earlier this year:

Ah yes...I can see you'll need help with that.

Canberra's only a six hour drive, what's your address?

And I'll even bring my own glass :D

    Just the glass. :(

But I can sense and understand your reticence to share something as fine as that without maintaining "liquid equilibrium".

Unfortunately nothing on my sideboard at present is worthy of sharing since I've just polished off the last of my Johnny Walker Explorer's Club Collection "The Gold Route".

    So.

That being the case, I shall console myself with my old trusty favourite, and as we sit in the calm of the evening taking our wee dram, think of the men who created these wonderful medicines, and quietly thank them for it with "Slange Var".

Am a fan of the laphroig. I want to try their quarter cask.

Had a bottle of that about a month ago.

Verrrrrrrrrrrry nice, but I'm partial to peat so anything like that goes down well.

I do enjoy the lighter Speysides in summer though, and on the recent cruise I did, the barman used to serve me a regular of about half a tumbler of Glenfiddich 15YO with two ice cubes.

Sitting on the upper deck in a Rheinegold sunset, cruising up the Rhine and listening to Wagner was quite ethereal.

Unless I had a glass of each right now and could do a blind taste test I really couldn't say.

I'm not a big user of terms like "smokey old leather shoes with vanilla and raisins" blah blah blah.

I just know what tastes nice.

At the time, it felt a bit more mellow than the standard 10YO, but that may have been "label induced influence".

It'd be interesting to do a back to back comparison, maybe that should be my next project :D

How about a back to back to back tasting? ;)

So the quarter cask - as these whiskies age in the cask, they tend to loose the intense peat flavor, so an older scotch will be very nice and rounded, but will not be as intense with the peat. But with the quicker maturation in the smaller cask, the peat intensity is there, but you also get a more rounded flavor that would be found in an older whisky. So it is sort of the best of both worlds. I would suggest trying it neat first, but also adding a wee bit of water will open things up a bit and you will get citrus notes that you can't taste when it's full strength.

So my preference in whisky is from Islay, as I love peat and smoke, but I do have a couple of others:

Probably my favourite non-Islay is the Glanemorangie with the port wood finish. Very nice and a bit lighter for the times you don't want the peat (which for me is not often really).

And how about some other Islay whisky:

The Ardberg on the left was a gift that arrived from the UK last week - it is very nice indeed! It has some punch too - 54%

One I wish I could find again was the Bowmore 21 YO I had several years ago - it was very nice and I would love another bottle...I think I bought that one duty free at Heathrow...

Anyway, I am a Scotch lover so nice to know there are a few others here, and yes I use the same glasses as the others posted - my are actually branded Laphroaig...

    Cheers, Al
