As a music teacher, I can confirm it’s the same with children and percussion instruments.
Indulge the little thumpers and noise-making miscreants! From that valuable influence, very positive outcomes sometimes occur.

Of course, I totally agree! Encouragement and enthusiasm are crucial. I just meant that sometimes we DON'T want them to play... and learning that discipline is an important part of being a musician, too. 😀

I recommend you send me the watch for a six-month field operational, test & evaluation - I promise not to press the chrono buttons w/o properly winding the watch and a full report at the end of the test 😉

...without first telling him not to go ham on the little buttons.

So I handed over one of my cal. 321 Speedmasters to a friend who wanted to take a look, and he repeatedly pressed both chrono buttons in an unwound state before I could tell him to cool it. I’ve never thought to do this myself. Can it cause any potential movement damage? Thanks.
Funny, exact same situation happened to me once as well. I handed over my vintage Seamaster Chrono to a work collegue, he looked at it for 5 seconds and pressed both pushers simultaneously like a few times in a raw, before i even managed to say something. 😲
I was so surprised, i wasnt even sure why would somebody try to do this. . So i asked him..
He told me the chrono hand was not reset to exact 12 position so he wanted to reset it. 😗
I found out, as a student he used to work in a watch store as a sales person.

Nevertheless, are there really Chronographs that reset that way?! 😕 at least i never had a chance to handle one. But my experience with chronos is very limited to 861 movements.

Quartz chronograph movements have a mode that can be accessed by pushing in both pushers that will allow you to adjust the chrono hand in the case of drift. I don't know if any mechanical chronographs can work the same way (and I'm not about to try on one of mine, lol).

That makes sence! Thank you 👍

THIS! Had a former boss who would always pick up one of my fountain pens off my desk, use it incorrectly, messing up the nib, then complain about how they hate fountain pens... a few days later, rinse and repeat. For years!!! The. Worst.
I think most fountain pen users recommend against letting anyone use your fountain pen. The nib is worn by the user, and because each person holds a pen differently, they shouldn't be shared.

I hope you watch is still working ok...

I even find this with computers.. For some reason, some people just pound on things...

I had a friend once who I let test ride my old BMW motorcycle (boxer engine), he was coming off a rice burner. I told him "keep it below 5k rpm, it's not like your bike". Pulling away from the first stop-light he redlined it..... several times.
I would have lost my mind over that. It's usually not a good idea to lend vintage items. Most people don't respect other people's things. I've been to car shows and have seen people standing talking to others while leaning against someone's else's car. Rivet's, belt buckles etc can cause damage.

Two words: decoy pens.
I like this idea. In the cybersecurity world it's called a "honey pot" - something that looks interesting but isn't and contains the damage from spreading to other systems. I can think of several things on my desk that need a distraction from 3 year-old nieces.

My brother was over a few weeks ago, he wanted to listen to records in my living room while I was making dinner- he is on a Mingus kick right now- I have a pretty deep catalog. He has a Technics SL1200 turntable with a Sumiko cartridge on it (I set it up for him). I have a Thorens 124 with 12” Ortofon arm and SPU cartridge. Needless to say, the record ended while I was mid sauté and I heard that unmistakable screeeeetch/thump come from my living room....yes, he tried to take the arm off the record....with a $1.5k cartridge...my heart sank. Luckily no harm done (other than to the record), but lesson learned....how about CD’s tonight bro!

I learnt years ago you don't leave your good guitars out during a house party..Even if they are just hanging on a wall.

Had a similar incident with a nephew a few years back, but my cartridge at the time was an Ortofon MC-30 Supreme 😲. One channel disappeared from that point on, and I’ve never had such a good cartridge since 🤔

Mate had just bought a custom axe from a knife maker worth a fair amount of coin, As we got home Mrs Standy was cutting some cassava in the yard. Mates axe was out of the sheath by Mrs Standy in 3 seconds and swung into the ground cutting a few cassava and lodging about 10 cm into the ground. ( worst thing for a axe ) Mentioned it shouldn’t be done and all I got was “there made to be used” 🤦
Mate didn’t mind as much as I don’t think he knew that sticking a axe into dirt is the quickest way to blunt it.

For some reason that escape some me now, I lent my 5513 Rolex to my Dad for a while, well until he gave it back to me as it wasn’t keeping good time- he had been using it for everything, including jackhammering a concrete floor up!!!

I can’t remember if this was before or after they were looking after our recuperating cat which clawed his leather chesterfield to bits!
🤦🤦
