Nixon didn't turn it down. He wasn't allowed to accept it. That's different.

The Life magazine exclusive contract is well-known. What you aren't mentioning is that most of the astronauts were military with tight budgets. After becoming astronauts they incurred huge demands for time and new expenses. The Life magazine contract was intrusive but it at least gave the families some control over the press. They did not have to speak with every journalist from across the world camped out in their front yard. Plus, they received some reimbursement for sharing their every moment and for travel and clothing allowance.

Do you begrudge them that small measure after working around the clock for years on emd?
Yeah you've read me wrong on that one.

I have no issue at all with what the early astronauts got.

I've shared this before, but what good is a collection if you can't share/show off again and again? 😉

There are many rewards for collecting space memorabilia, and if anyone is thinking about it, I'd encourage you to look for something. Collecting focuses our interests, which often ends up giving us new insights and appreciation for our subjects.

This collection of photos from the Apollo XI World Tour is an example. (There are a few more from the lot that aren't included here.) These came from the Armstrong estate sale and feature photos from the Yugoslavia visit.

The photos were in a separate lot from the lot I wanted, which was a card from the tour signed by Armstrong and Collins. I almost didn't bid on the photos, but they were lingering near to end and I thought it would add to my signed card.

It stretches the imagination to hold artifacts that a person kept in their own collection. For whatever reason, either as cherished memories or forgotten items in a drawer, Armstrong held onto these photos. That in itself intrigued me.

After the auction, I came across an obituary written by Collins about Armstrong. Here is a quote from that obituary:

The detail of the dinner conversation is a wonderful insight into the men, both the subject and the author. When I read that part, I naturally remembered my photos and went looking for them. I found what might have been the dinner where that conversation took place.

Each age has its heros. No doubt the Apollo astronauts will be in most history books, even if it might be the first time the kids will have heard of them when they read the books. The more I learn about them the more I appreciate their accomplishment. Their are dumber things to collect.

Just seeing these pictures gets my juices flowing. Such an amazing period in history, science and life in general.

But there was Vietnam and the very serious and dangerous Cold War to greatly temper things, with massive inflation just around the corner that caused a lot of damage. Many thought the Moon Race was a waste of money.

The moon race was essentially just one Battlefield upon which the Cold War was fought. Not sure how the world should have handled that differently?

Can't believe despite the "interwebs" many dates on well-documented events given are still incorrect.
The photo of Neil Armstrong on a boat near the bridge with the small version of the "Statue of Liberty" and Eifel tower in background - Paris was taken in July 1979 as he visited Europe for the 10th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.
On July 10, 1979 he appeared in the France TV show " Les Dossier de l'Ecran " ( Files on Screen ) wearing his Gold "Apollo 11 tribute" Omega Speedmaster BA 145.022-69 chronograph n° 17...

No, it’s not the one he wore on the Moon, of course. The Speedmaster Professional 105.012 with NASA serial number 46 that Neil Armstrong wore during Apollo 11 is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. I am talking about the watch he received during that famous banquet dinner on […]

To be a tad pedantic, Armstrong wore no watch on the moon at all...

When he was inside the LEM, was he on the moon? 😉
