Dear all, I am newby to vintage watches and this great forum. My search of information led me to this great source.
While I was looking for a decent vintage omega, I found these 2 with different calibers 501 and 1020 and wanted to get some expert opinions before a desicion.
Pictures are very limited but I appreciate any small piece of comment or information you may provide. These both around $300. Found them on a local vintage market and no papers or servicing info is available.

    Thanks in advance

Two nice watches to start a vintage collection with, I think.

The first is from around 1954 or so, gold capped. Looks to have the original crown.

    The Seamaster is early 1970s.

Both appear to have original dials and have cases in fair shape.

Hard to see the hour hand in the first example. (Actually, I'm not even sure if there's one at all.)

Can you share a photo with a clearer view?

Neither are particularly desirable to collectors, but both are good starting points for a budding collection.

The hour hand is there, it's just on top of the minute hand. When I looked for it I did see the brand mark in the crystal...

Thank you both for the answers, Unfortunately I have no other picture but sure there was hour hand. Which one would be your pick among these 2 pieces considering this will be my first vintage watch ?

Well, that's personal taste of course but I'd go with the old one...

If that's the case, then I'm not sure it's correct.

Unless I were comfortable with the hour hand of the first example, it would be the Seamaster.

    My opinion:
The first 1 is franken: dial & hands are newer & not for this ref. Never see those scripts on Omega on mid 50s.
The 2nd look far better: original dial & hands - sharp case - looking good movement.

Good eye. First 1 dial is probably from 70's.

    Re the first Omega: correct. It's probably a mid-'50s SM that could've looked like . . .

I got suckered by that one.

Looking at it again, in light of @No Mercy's observation that dial does look much later than the movement.

    Thanks for the lesson.

The seller of the franken watch called me today saying he also has this piece available. Asking for $600, what is your opinion ? IMG_2608.JPG IMG_2609.JPG

Looks ok, but not an especially desirable or collectible example. The Seamaster is still the best of the lot.
