The watch was purchased from Ebay. No service history or papers provided. The listing said Omega speedmaster reduced 39mm 1140 Cal. 45 jewels. That's the obvious. I bought it cause it was at a great price under 1,400.00 I can't seem to find any information or sources about this particular Speedy reduced. Please help!!!! Reference number? The serial number seems to be polished off too. Is the movement expensive to service or serviceable? Is it worth owning? Reliability? Collectable? What does the writing on the case back mean? Should I have purchased a newer version? What kind of accuracy should I be expecting from this movement? What's acceptable? Thanks Omega community
Might be easier to find info on a caliber 1140, since that's what your watch has. Yes, it's expensive to service.
Here's a listing of all the reduced references with 1140s. Starts at 1988 http://www.chronomaddox.com/speedy_history_cm.html#DA_175.0043
The red writing is most likely from watchmakers during service. The stamped info is from Omega. The reference is there but the photo is poor so I can't read what it says.
Looks like it's been serviced a few times by the couple of different red markings on the caseback. Which is good. Worth owning ? Yes Collectable? Not really compared to a moon watch. Reliability? Yes And you should be able to get it very accurate with a service. Not as much love as the manual wound Speedmaster but still a nice watch. Several here have them and enjoy the slightly smaller size and the automatic instead of having to wind every day.
For a watch this age what type of accuracy should I be expecting? Given that it's been serviced before. What's acceptable
What’s acceptable to you ? With a good watchmaker the same as new, it’s not a vintage watch and even they can be as accurate as new....
15 + or - seconds per day would be acceptable for me. What's Omega specifications for 1140? I'm asking many questions because I will receive the watch soon and I would like to be prepared or educated with this particular watch. This forum has many knowledgeable members. A great resource for many like me. Newbies in the world of horology.
I have an mk40, caliber 1151 which is probabily around the same period of that one and is doing around 3s/day.
I just got an 1155 back from omega service and it's running at 7s/day. The OB tech is going to tighten it up for me this week.
The watch and bracelet felt cheap and lightweight. No heaft. I think the biggest disappointment was the size. I see why many folks here choose the speedmaster moon watch . I own many vintage watches in the 36-38 range and they wear great. I just didn't love the reduced for the money I paid. So I'm sending it back. I would definitely recommend wearing one first, if your considering a speedmaster reduced/automatic. Be warned
Did you do any searches on Speedmaster Reduced before buying? It would be a surprise to no one who did that these have major issues and often get sold on eBay when a service, costing anything from $400-700 is due. Yes a healthy one can be a nice thing to own, but one with a polished off serial with no service history? That is just asking for trouble! Return it sharp and do your research before buying next time.
