Need help with a 165.024 SM300

Hi All,

I'm considering making an offer on this SM300. It looks alright to me, but my vintage skills have grown rusty. I'd love to just get another set of eyes on it, and maybe guidance on reasonable value?

I can see the obvious faults like the missing chunk of lume out of the hour hand, the crazing around the edge of the crystal, and the wear and tear to the bezel. I'm more concerned with more fundamental things that might be wrong that I don't have enough experience to identify or even to notice as being "off."

Thanks!

Myron

Hey Myron!

Hope you are well! I am no help on vintage sm300 but @jumpingsecond knows a bit. Others are out there as well.

Happy to give the thread a bump!

Thanks guys! I feel like I've done my homework here, and I'm just hoping for some expert eyes to confirm I'm not totally nuts.

What I think I know:

- s/n (24M) jibes with bezel style, bracelet model number and production date.
- no obvious fakery like pointy A on caseback or stubbies on dial
- warranty card? Easily reproduced but I don't really care.
- bezel crenellations aren't too sharp or deep.
- caseback inside engravings look right.

Really the only thing that is slightly concerning is the black color of the little piece on the movement that is the adjustment lever. I'm not sure what you call this thingamajig, but every other one of these movements I've seen it's been silver/steel colored, not black.

I've circled the thingamajig here:

And here is a picture of a donor movement I have, same caliber 552. You can see the same part is silver:

I would ask for another pic. It’s possible it’s just blacking out in the light due to angle etc. because it’s highly reflective. Note the pic of yours is staring to black out in your pic.

I’m pretty sure it’s the light as I experienced the same thing previously. Just asked the seller to take another snap.

I also agree that the black is probably caused by reflection. It looks like a nice honest example to me, with no major faults except that bit of missing lume you note and the crystal problems.

My eyes say all is OK

and you have a 165024, there, and will join a select group of "no dot" owners. A distinction without much cache, but a difference none-the-less.

my “no dot” from 1967

Oh boy, thanks you guys! I've sent my seller an offer, but we're still dancing. He is a good person, so I'll feel fine however it turns out.

I really appreciate the help and support from OF members. Such a great community!

Did you get it?

Looking on my phone, I wondered if the inside of the lugs had seen some touch up brushing. It did not appear to match the wear on the rest of the watch. Could be wrong, of course.

Well, that certainly could be the case (no pun intended), but if the rest of the watch is legit I won't even mind that. I have, in fact, bought the watch but the seller doesn't use PayPal much so PayPal put a hold on my payment. He's a decent guy with solid references but just doesn't use PayPal often, so a transaction the size of this one was flagged as possibly fraudulent. Frustrating on both ends...

Hopefully I'll be able to come back to this thread in a couple weeks and update with fresh, high definition pictures. In the meantime, I had to scratch the itch with a MkII Project 300 as an Xmas gift for my kiddo. We're both stoked about it. 😀

Thanks for your interest, @timoss. Happy Seamastering, all!

Should not take too long. As soon as it is delivered to you, the seller gets the money.

Yup, thank you @watchyouwant, I explained this very thing to my seller, but he feels safest waiting for the whole hold period. Sigh...

My mission is to get him to join Omega Forums!

Only after the deal is done, or he may rethink selling it.
