I've currently got my eye on an old Omega listed on eBay. I've tried searching around to verify its authenticity but it seems like a bit of a mystery. The serial dates it to 1947, but the dial I've never seen before. It doesn't look like its been repainted but as I'm relatively new to the vintage watch scene I could be totally wrong. My thoughts are that its a redial but the dial is aged somewhat which makes me think maybe it is original as the seller states.

Any help identifying the watch or verifying its authenticity would be hugely appreciated. Much thanks :)

Thanks for your reply Bill. One of the features that does give me pause is around the Omega symbol there is a faint outline with a teardrop shape created in the middle. This does look quite uniform however. Has anyone seen this dial before?

The applied markers have the same type of outline. Dials can age in strange ways.

It is patina created by a combination of radiation damage and small amounts of moisture over 60+ years.

Very common on watches like these and a good sign of originality. Not sure what is up with those hands, but I kind of like the effect.

Also if anyone has any more info about this model or has seen one like it I'd be very interested to know as I've just purchased this little oddity

It arrived today! Very happy ::psy:: This is my first time with a bumper movement, as well as a movement this old, is there any particular considerations with this mechanism? Any things to be carful of or avoid doing to it?

Thanks everyone, you've been great

Just idly browsing and saw this post for the first time and see you've already bought this one. Was the 1947 date you gave a typo? The 351 didn't come out til 1949. If I recall, I have one that seemingly dates to 1948 but Ranfft, Maddox, Omega and many (if not most) others are pretty firm on the 1949 date.

I'm sleep-typing as I do this so do let me know.

According to me it’s a cal. 340 before it got renamed so, or a 342?

*edit: the picture clearly states 351 so thats a given
