Need help buying vintage Omega

The Seamaster just completed at £520 including postage. That's slightly more than I'd want to pay but it's a classic watch and these are getting scarce now. It's certainly a better deal than that Geneve at £695. Not that there is anything wrong with the later Geneve line, but on the whole "utilitarian" describes them well.
I understand, I was initially looking at Seamaster, but there were so many Genevas, I kinda got lost in it 😀.
I guess I will be hunting 1960s Seamaster now, preferably with 522 automatic caliber.

Lots more Ford's than Ferrari's for a reason.

I am also looking at this one, it has Caliber 551, which is even more interesting.

Very interesting and unusual. Once again it has the utilitarian Gèneve case, but the caliber and dial make this one a bit of a grail.

How much?

As Jim says above, same 070 case normally seen on Geneves but branded Seamaster as the next rung up the Omega ladder. Earlier too at around 1967-8. Do bear in mind that the original chronometer rating and performance are a little irrelevant after 50 years but it is still offers more than the original watch all things like condition being equal. I would still want it at less than the price of your original suggestion but that may be a better choice long term.

ps it is difficult to tell but the movement photo suggests there may be a little corrosion or at least dirt around the case opening. This could suggest it needs a service and no longer has much water resistance. i have seen a lot worse though and the movement is very clean. This is the elephant in the room with watches like this, the service can cost as much as the purchase price again if there are hidden problems lurking.

Price is high with this one too...
1000 gbp
It comes with 4 straps though, but still a bit too much for me.

Way too high. £500-650 abs tops and only then if serviced. Nice unusual watch but let’s not get silly.

I told the seller there is dirt / corosion around the movement and he says no vintage watch 40+ years old can be sold as waterproof. I agree, but some water resistance is still desired. Am I wrong?
When I mentioned it is too expensive, I just got "OK, Bye" 😀

Well I never never expect a vintage watch to be fully water resistant to any great degree and would treat it as such but corrosion/dirt still isn't a good sign IMO. I would expect a serviced watch with replaced seals to be at least shower proof ie not mist up and that one may not even offer that. If that is dirt then I would suggest it hasn't been recently serviced.

Edit: Looking at the seal which looks perished I would say it has either had a half assed service or none at all. Any decent watchmaker would routinely replace a rubber casebook seal like that. One to avoid perhaps unless the price is hugely flexible which sounds unlikely.

Here is the auction: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Omega-Se...342768?hash=item2aa5af1af0:g:oKMAAOSwJstaydQz

The seller's modus operandi is high prices and from his feedback it clearly works for him. In cases like this there is absolutely no point in trying to get the price down unless it's something you desperately want and are prepared to come near the asking price. Forget this one and move on. There are plenty more vintage Omegas and will be for a long time yet!

I found another one, but what seems strange to me: it is a chronometer movement (also dial), but the case back has 166.070 engraved.
Is not xx6.xxx supposed to mean calendar instead of chronometer?
Or is this common and normal?
I really appreciate your input guys, I already have Omega SMPc, but I have been dreaming about a nice vintage piece for quite some time 😀

Correct, the movement and dial appear to be in the wrong case so a "frankenwatch". Looking up the case reference without having to be told is a major step towards actually having some idea of what you are doing, good work.

Anyone has opinion on the originality of this one? Price is 899 USD, negotiable.

The dial looks ok to me but the case is quite worn and polished and the crown is an incorrect replacement. Not recommended.
