Hi! I have an oppurtunity to purchase this 1930s~1940s Omega at a good price (in my opinion) and would like to know whether it might be a frankenwatch. The dial has some damage but I think it is acceptable given its age. Any thoughts? Should I avoid it? How much would be a reasonable price to pay for it? Any information or advice is much appreciated!

Serial No.: 9M (1939)
Movement: R17.8 17 Jewels
Case No.: 10101050

Thank you!

Regards,
Hensley

I do not think that it is a very expensive watch..A reasonable price will be about 100 Euro.
I also think the bracelet is not original and do not fit very well and bend a little the lugs.

I also think that is better to let it go. You did not said which is the price but i do not think that worth to buy a watch even for a low price if you do not like the watch at all..

Hensley you obviously have a healthy and sincere interest in vintage Omegas! I think you have enough of us in the forum on your "team" to assist you in your potential purchase of a vintage Omega that you might as well post your approximate budget and see if anything on this forum's marketplace might pop up as well as get solid advice on what models fit your price range.

Thank you for always commenting on my posts and making me feel welcomed here. 😀

Well, I cannot really put my finger on it but I enjoy collecting automatic pieces that have that “old” look. So far, I have spent between $200 to $400 for each of my purchases, some I may have overpaid. I reside in Japan and vintage Omega watches are quite abundant here.

What I like about vintage Omega watches is that many of them are fully functional despite their age and that really amazes me. Years down, I hope to be able to wear something that was made 100 years before! I am still in my early 30s so I think that might be possible. 😁

Here are the watches that I have at the moment. They are neither perfect nor rare pieces but I like to wear them nonetheless.

1. De Ville Cal.711 151.0039 (Paid $200)
Cabochon crown missing its stone but a replacement crown is on its way!

2. Constellation Cal.1011 168.0065 (Paid $380)
Missing its bezel but a nice gentlemen here has agreed to make me a replacement!

3. Geneve Cal.1012 166.0163 (Paid $0 lucky me!)
Nothing seems to be in very bad condition but I might have the chipped and scratched crystal replaced.

4. Bumper Cal. 344 F-6238 (Paid $400)
Everything seems fine to me!

5. Seamaster Cal.490 2848 (Paid $310)
Replaced the wrong crown with a correct clover one after some nice gentlemen here pointed that out. Replacement dauphine hands are on the way. Unfortunately, I do not yet have a solution for the poor looking dial.

I have been looking at old manual watches from the 1930s to 1940s recently. i might add one to my collection if something catches my eye. It would be nice to wear a different watch for each day of the week. 😉

Maybe @mac_omega would be willing to comment on the dial in the original post? To me, the sub-dial font looks very similar to certain Longines dials from the 1940s made by Stern Freres.

Well I think I jumped the gun a bit in assuming you were without luck in building your collection as you have a few winners there already! Keep posting your watch-hunting updates as my revised assumption is you are a natural born hunter 😁

And thank YOU for tagging mac_omega! 😉
My pleasure. It is always great to learn from the experts on this forum. As someone who knows little about Omega but likes watches from the '30s and '40s, I find this watch appealing. Along with the dial and hands, I particularly like the Swiss-made, screw-back case. Of course, the fact that it is gold-plated or gold-filled (or something similar) is detrimental to its market value. Also, I imagine that the diameter is not very large. But if the price is not expensive and you like, then go for it.

Yes, I second that. I have received a lot of help in just my first month here. I like the dial designs on watches from that period too, especially those with sub-second dials.

Regarding this piece, the case size is approximately 31mm but I have thin wrists so it should not look too small on me. I like the hands in particular, and the case material does not really bother me since I will not be reselling it. My initial concern was that it might have been redialled but now that I can be certain that it is original, I am going to go ahead with my purchase. 👍
