This is an awesome thread with some great(!!!) photography, wish I found it sooner, but here goes:
Was out cycling on Ca帽ada Road (San Mateo, CA), as I crested a small hill there was this beautiful rattle snake siting in the middle of the road. He was close to a meter long and thicker than my arm. I got off my bike as I wanted to usher him off the road using my bike so he wouldn't get runover. Right as I'm about to walk out into the road, some lady in a Mercedes comes flying up the hill and just barley catches his head under her tire. I motioned for her to stop, but it happened so fast. He started flailing around and was pretty badly damaged. I managed to move him off the road and in spite of him doing his best to strike at me, he was clearly not going to make it, so I put him out of his misery with a large rock. Wish I could have stopped that car...
Found this little guy in the same area on a different day, just sitting on the side of the road with no apparent injury.
Wish I could say this was taken by me but it was sent by a friend. I love owls ever since I I held one on my wrist (thick leather gloves) but I rarely see them in nature. This would blow my mind
Spiders in the house get crushed (wife's rule) but box elders are allowed to be escorted off the premises.
Edit: this is actually a western conifer stink bug, not a box elder. We also have box elders. They are both "bugs" and both require the same response after my wife discovers one.
