My Son's Inherited Vintage Omega

After my mother in law passed, my son Inherited an Omega we believe was his great grandfathers. It had been stored in a clean dry place for decades, and was unknown to the family until her death. We believe the watch was a post war gift from his wife. My son then stored it until recently, and I have decided to learn as much as possible about the watch, model, year, value etc. I am an Omega owner also, and I'd like to possibly get this watch repaired for my son's university graduation present. I brought the watch to my watch repair store, and they said it would have to go to Switzerland for refurbishment and repairs. Any advice on this watch would be greatly appreciated.

I accidentally repeated the photos, new to posting.

Great heirloom.

No need to send it to Omega for refurbishment any competent watchmaker, preferably one with an Omega parts account can resurrect this.

The information to identify your watch will be found inside the case back and on the movement. Nice clear photos of both will be most helpful.

If you give us your location someone here can probably recommend a watchmaker.

We live In Vancouver BC, Canada. The watch is currently at Time and Gold, in Vancouver. Once I get it back I'll take more pictures. The case back is bare, and I couldn't find any other identifiers on it. I'll appreciate tips on a reputable repair place to send it to. He'd like to keep the look, as is, maybe cleaned up...but getting it working would be amazing.

I saw from your photos the outside surface of the caseback is bare, however, any identifiers would be found on the inside surface of the caseback as well as on the movement itself.

Take it to Norbert (the German Watchmaker) in Yaletown and see what he says.

New crystal and a movement service is all this needs IMO .. for gods sake get it back from the idiots who want to send it back to the factory.

idiots

Seriously? While I personally wouldn't make that choice myself, there's no need to be insulting.

The retailer or faux repair shop (mall battery changer? ) who wants to send this back to the factory .. not the OP who was wise enough to come here for advice.

He said "watch repair store." And, yes, many only service some brands and send the rest for factory repair. Like I said, I would not necessarily have gone that route, eitther, but to do so isn't "idiocy" either.

Sorry .. yes it is. What comes back isn’t what left. But hey, this is a collectors forum so that’s the general perspective.

Perhaps, but “people who should never touch a vintage Omega or any other family heirloom” takes up so much unnecessary space. 😉

Actually, it's not a "collector's forum". Absolutely nowhere does it say that; I've looked. It is for people who like watches, especially Omega watches.

This is what appears in "About Us"

Omega Forums is a community dedicated to Omega watches and watch enthusiasts.

WHO ARE WE?

Omega Forums was started by a group of enthusiasts that shared a common passion for Omega watches and collecting. Over the years the site has grown. Today we have over 60,000 members. Our members have created over 1.5 million posts covering Omega watches and other brands.
I know you're going to argue, "It says collectors right there, see!" but that just means there are some collectors here.

Now, if your intent is to drive non-collectors away, then you're doing a pretty good job of it. My own accumulation of Omega watches run from 1917 to roughly 1995 or so, at this point. I do not consider it a "collection" because it is not curated and I really don't care what any one individual piece is worth. I just happen to like owning and wearing Omega watches, and the older I get, the less I care about not-Omega watches.

While some of you, er, more vocal participants are indeed collectors, I assure you that most of the members do not consider themselves that way.

They, like me, just like watches.

And that should be enough.

Also recommend Norbert, he's great, especially with pieces like this.
Stay away from the retail-ish shops, they'll take weeks longer and charge double.

@SkunkPrince ...you are of course, entitled to your opinion(s) I’m sure the OP however has learned a) to be careful in selecting a repair service. b) the names of some competent watchmakers c) he might have an interesting and yes, cool watch.
