I got my Speedmaster FOIS back from the OB after getting it serviced from the Seattle service center. I found this unusual engraving on the back of the watch today.
Does anyone know what this is?
Its that round-ish mark above the letter "M".

    Thanks in advance.

There is a thread on that mark...strange that it was added at service.

I'm skeptical it was added at service. I don't think Omega does any engraving outside Switzerland, and that is a laser engraved anti-counterfeit mark present on all stainless FOIS caseback's. (images of the pre-production Number "0" watch don't have it for obvious reasons). I think your mind is playing tricks with you.

So it could have been there since day one?
Perhaps, I might not have seen the marking. The watch actually didn't function right out of the box and I took it to the OB to get it taken care of.

Anyone with a FOIS chime in and tell me if theres this marking on thiers too?

    Thanks guys

The same mark is on the caseback of my never-serviced 2017 Speedy Pro.

image.jpg On the back of my 3313 POC also. It's an anti counterfeiting mark. They have been putting it on watches for at least 5 years. Pretty sure a lot longer then that.

That was there all along. They have been putting that mark on caseback a since around 2005 so it is not exactly a surprise to see one.

I'm amazed that there's nothing on the internet about this little symbol.

Oh wait, there is, just look at that, amazing:

And for the millionth time, it's NOT an anti-counterfeit device, it was put on Omega watches as a trademark/copyright device as a result of disagreements between Omega and Costco.

See post number 6 by Omega 1120 on WUS here for the full history.

Makes me wonder about those posts when people say Omega repair scratched my watch. I'm betting a lot of scratches don't get noticed until after watches come back from service.

    That's not entirely true either.

It is a trademark that was put on watches intended to be sold in the US only. It existed several years before the US Supreme Court decision in 2010.

This was done in an effort to try to control the "grey"market of watches being sold by Omega authorized dealers outside the US to non-authorized distributors within the US.

Costco (or their supplier) was one of those non-authorized distributors and when Omega discovered them selling watches without the trademark in California, they sued Costco. The lower courts ruled in favor of Omega and imposed some kind of damages.

The Supreme Court decision was a 4-4 deadlock, (a new Justice had to recuse herself, because she had worked on the case previously) so the lower court ruling was allowed to stand.

Obviously, Costco and Omega settled on the conditions of grey market pieces imported to the US sometime later, as they are still being sold, even in California.

    Hope this helps,

It is very highly possible you never noticed it.

People certainly inspect their watches very closely after coming back from service - often closer than they did before they sent it off. This is why in addition to recommending that the owner take a set of photos before they send the watch off for service, I always take photos as soon as I unbox a watch that is coming in for service to document the condition. Occasionally people will see a mark they didn't see before, and having photos to show it was there when it arrived has helped resolve some questions without any drama...

    Cheers, Al

When I took my Speedmaster 9300 to an Omega Boutique for a new bezel the rep took about 5 minutes to go over it physically with me, noting every little imperfection. I took closeup pics of the watch from all angles. No surprises. I also brought all the cards it came with and he looked those over too. I only paid for parts - all work was free.
