Hello!

I joined the "Omega family" this week when I picked up a full set "Bond" seamaster 2531 from 1997/1998. I had been back and forth between a Speedmaster 3592 or a tritium dial 2531 for just over a year now and the price for this set was just right.

The watch was apparently serviced by a "watch maker" just over two years ago, but it seems to be gaining about +45 seconds / day - which is obviously out of range for an Omega - especially after reading about the accuracy of the ETA movement it uses. Should I bring the watch in for a "full service" or is this something that can be adjusted by a qualified person? I am not trying to be cheap - I am only curious. I will do what is best for the watch!

I'm located in Stockholm, Sweden - and if anyone happens to have a suggested I would appreciate it!

45 sec per day sounds like you definitely want to get a full service from Omega. Service by a "watch maker" can mean anything the seller wants (or nothing at all). That looks like a great piece in fantastic exterior condition, so I would definitely pay the price to keep in in good working order.

 

Great watch , I would also suggest a full service from Omega, they will also make it back to full waterproof, and you can ask to get back all the parts they change back and will have a nice warranty to go with, keep all your paperwork after the job is done it will help if you ever want to sell or trade up the watch.

 

The watch might not need a full omega service ( 500 euro plus plus ) and in my opinion a good watch guy should be able to adjust the watch to a more accurate setting for a fraction of the full omega price. Only my opinion though.

Have you tried demagnetizing it? +45 spd sounds exactly like that and your watch could very well have found itself in some magnetic field during transit.

 

I assume this could be done at a dealer?

You can even do it yourself if you want, demagnetizers cost less than 10 $.

 

I'm not opposed to omega service. I just don't want anything else done to the watch... I. E. Polishing or visible parts replaced..

 

Omega will absolutely replace the crown and HEV, so if those are included in your list of "visible parts" then you don't want to use Omega. They may also replace the dial and hands if they feel that leaving them will cause the watch to come back under warranty. This can happen no matter what you ask them not to replace. So even if you are okay with replacing the crown and HEV, you still may want to find an independent watchmaker to do the work.

Happy to receive your advice, Al. I do believe that I will seek out a watchmaker before using omega, as while want the movement to be serviced I'd prefer to keep the overall original look of the watch.

I live in Stockholm and I assume a qualified watchmaker is in the area.

For independent watchmakers in Stockholm, try A B C Service Centrum at Hornsgatan 29C (no website) or Farfars klocka, http://www.farfarsklocka.se. I've had good experience with both.

Why would omega change the crown?

 

It's a matter of regular service, they replace all seals and such to ensure waterproofness etc.

 

I've reached out to a watchmaker here in Stockholm. Hope they can help take care of my watch, she's a beauty.

 

Even if they replaced the dial and hands, wouldn't they be exactly the same parts? Would there be any way to tell?

The current dial and hands have tritium lume, and the new would be Luminova, so yes the watch would come back looking quite different.
