How exactly does this work? It's to distribute light evenly? How expensive do they usually run?

I'm getting into macro photography, but so far I've been relying on natural light. Makes it difficult in the winter (not as much sunlight)

I'm just starting out but that is the principle. The tent or box diffuses the light direction and eliminates glare and shadows (theoretically!).

It diffuses light. When I’ve used them to shoot blown glass I used multiple light sources diffused against walls.

They aren't relatively expensive, 20-100$ US, depending on size and quality.
It's the lights, tripods, filters, cameras, lenses and the cool watches that bust your balls (insert appropriate genitalia reference).
