I was at a collectors meet and someone suggested I should have a look at Zenith. I don't know the brand so well but took a gamble on this on an online auction. It arrived today and I am really pleased with it. The patina on the Champagne dial and the rusted hands are what I really like in a vintage watch. It is 37.5mm case. The serial number looks to be 9296633, but it isn't very clear. If anyone could help identify it, I would really appreciate it.
A beautiful piece. To be honest, I've never come across a Zenith with twisted lugs. Maybe someone else could chime in?
We're going to need to work on your google-fu @craigbythesea The movement looks to be a Zenith 40 calibre - http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&&2uswk&Zenith_40_0 If you run a google search for "Zenith 40 calibre", and then head to images, there are a fair few designs that this movement was fitted to. Enjoy the rabbit hole!
Dear @tyrantlizardrex thank you for the pointer. Now that I have a starting point hopefully my google-fu will improve. Jumping into the rabbit hole with both feet. This is sadly what I enjoy.
Dear tryantlizardrex, good spot. This is a good start as it might help date the watch. The site says the movement was used between 1955 and 1960. The one shown has a similar serial number on the movement and is from 1956. Attaching a photo.
Shared my Zenith at the Time4aPint gathering yesterday. Lots of positive feedback and more thoughts on the model and date of this watch. There was consensus that it had not been redial or re-lumed. The aging on the hands was probably as a result of the hands being Radium based. Therefore supporting the aging view about regarding the aging of movement placing this as a pre-60's Zenith. I have spent a lot of time improving my Google-fu and have found lots of examples similar to this, most seem to be in Gold. So I believe this is a Calibre 40 from the late 50's, probably from between 1958-60. Thank you all for your pointers. I've really enjoyed finding out about Zenith and I have become a convert.
