Hey All, Thanks to the members on this forum (and for Archer for doing the recent excellent service on my omega geneve). I have come to be the proud owner of a family heirloom. It's a 1973 Omega Speedmaster Mkii. Bought by my father from omega in 1973, and worn though afghanistan, iran, iraq, india and a bunch of other places. After Al serviced my geneve and visiting my parents this past weekend. My dad loved the watch and said he was tired of his old speedmaster. I jokingly told him i'd trade the 1972 geneve for his Mk.ii. And what do you know he said OK, because he can't seem to read the small numbers so well anymore apparently. Do you guys think i made a good trade? I removed the case back to happily see the caliber 861 beating away. It keeps fantastic time but i will have it serviced before i wear it anyway. Cheers, -Tony
Thanks Gentlemen, i'm very excited to finally have a speedmaster. I also bought a reduced a few months ago but was quickly convinced to wait for a proper professional. Is it possible for watchmakers to re-finish the steel and remove some of the deep scratches? My dad flew off a motorcycle in the late 70's and needless to say the watch is still running but has a few nicks.. This movement must be pretty robust..
It's Kept in the family that the main-thing . Lovely swap tho wish my dad had a watch like that to give me
The good thing is that you can fix that lapse going forward by having one to hand over to your own kid when the time comes
I would keep the scratches and nicks as it is part of the watches' and your history. I think a new crystal would be in order thought. Just get it lightly cleaned up a bit. In years to come those nicks will remind you of your father and bring back happy memories.
To answer your question, yes, the case can be refinished, though the deepest scratches will remain. I say refinish or not as your heart directs you. Either is a valid choice. Tom
That sounds good, i think the huge chips and scratches in the crystal is what is bothering me the most.
That's awesome that you both still have fine Omega's, but you get the Speedie! New crystal will make your dad want it back, so you better be careful! ...... you may be buying him that shotgun...
That's what dads are for. Unfortunately watches are the only hobby my father didn't pick up. Maybe I can trade some airplanes or motorcycles in the future
