When I started to collect watches I decided I would stick to Omega. I also decided that I would never by a speedmaster. Wrong on both counts, but what the hell, if a man can t change his own mind what can he do?
Anyway I have been looking at various Rolex models, I like the root beer sub a lot but I spotted this 60s no date 6424 on the for sale forum a while back and liked the look of it. I toyed with the idea of buying a modern Oyster Perpetual, and it still might be a purchase in the future, however I like vintage watches more than modern ones so, as the price was right I decided to go for it. It is currently on its way to my home.
I like it's simple design and the fact that it is not flashy, I imagine people would not be able to tell it's a Rolex straight off the bat. The hands have been replaced and the bracelet rebuilt but overall I think it looks in good shape and I am really looking forward to wearing this one. The 6424 makes a great "entry-level" (whatever that is) Rolex. It wears nicely on the wrist, being relatively flat and large (36mm), and the vintage rivet bracelet is comfortable. When it is serviced it can be worn daily. Because it is manually wound, the screw-down crown and case tube are potential sources of wear-and-tear, and these are usually changed out at service.

Nice one. You should try to source correct width spring bars which do not extend pass the lugs. These are different 20mm spring bars than the ones in the other sports watches, as the lugs are thinner.

Yes it is 36mm. The buyer says it wears quite big.
I don t really have any knowledge about Rolex watches but what I could find was that without the bracelet they are around 2000 USD and a lot more with the bracelet. What I really like about this watch is that it has no date and thus no Cyclops date window, ::puke::which I have an irrational hatred of.

its the date for me, ive been looking for a no date watch with a screw down crown around 36mm to 38mm so this is right up the alley for me.

Yes, the 34mm equivalent is the ref. 6426...which is about the same size (though thinner than) the Air-King, with 19mm interlug width.

The other interesting thing about the 6424 is that the lugs are not drilled through. Thus, the end pieces are specific for this reference, #75, and have a larger space underneath the lugs to insert a tool to remove the spring bars, as there are no lug holes.

Whilst respecting the workmanship, I’ve never been a great fan of Rolex as they’re too ostentatious for my taste, however your watch looks fantastic  Clean, classy, elegant, pure understatement
