Hi! Since this is my first watch and my first post, I firstly apologise if I am getting anything wrong. This Omega Seamaster is a watch that I have bought and is currently on it's way to me. I was just wondering if you much more experienced people could help me with some things. Firstly, to identify it fully, I am aware it is a Seamaster from the late 1950's on the 501 movement. Steel case with (from what I can gather) a newer leather strap. Reference 2681 was mentioned, but I can't seem to find any information on that. Apart from that, I am not sure what the specific model this watch is etc, and hopefully someone can tell me. Secondly, I was wondering what "Ball Park" figure this watch is worth. I do not have it's original papers or case. but I have tried to get as many good photos I can. And lastly, as a collectors point of view is there anything you would do as the owner of this watch, for example restoration work? Or try and get the original strap or box etc. Thank you very much for your time, and again, I apologise if I have messed anything up!
Think this model needs a coathanger S. Round S and no swiss made. I vote redial... Font looks off as well..
Hmmm. Thank you for letting me know! Do you happen to have any pictures or links to what the dial should look like? Just as if it is a redial I will try and get a return, as the seller didn't specify that to me. I think he is in these forums actually.
Well. Before beeing to judgemental... Let's wait what the others have to say. I just did a quick search and threw my opinion on the web...
Welcome @SamMaddison I know nothing about Seamasters but the reference for your watch is here If you google Omega 2846 you get links like this https://omegaforums.net/threads/seamaster-18k-501-2846-2848-redial.8435/ The post about the relationship of Omega and Automatic should be of interest to you.
I’m not convinced it’s a redial yet. I get the concern about the S - the latest I have personally with an original dial and the rounded S is 1955, whereas this one is from 1957. Does it say “Swiss” or “Swiss made” under the 6 marker on the dial? Crown is an incorrect replacement. FYI, you aren’t likely to come to a conclusion on this topic with the seller. Unless that conclusion is returns are or are not accepted.
Yeah, I agree with the crown. See image below, that should be the correct one? It does not have "Swiss" or "Swiss Made" under the 6 marker. And after a little more research it looks like that dial was only on a gold case? The steel cased one should have steel numbers and hands?
The dial variation is fine. Yes, that’s the correct crown. No Swiss or Swiss made means redial, unless it’s being covered by the crystal retention ring, but usually you can see at least part of the text.
Definitely food for thought with various opinions. Is there any solid ways I can tell if redial or not? (apart from the Swiss or Swiss made)?
These are out of my comfort zone but if that’s a redial I’d like to know who did it. Looks original to me.
If would be easier to assess when personally inspecting the watch. Especially in regards to the font and whether they are in a good enough quality. But I think they look just the way they should. I am also pretty certain the "Swiss" or "Swiss Made" is present on the dial. I think the view it just blocked due to a wrong sized tension ring and crystal.
I can't see it very well but it looks original. There is an early "curvy S" which usually has a very dropped "r". There is a late "curly S" without the dropped "r". This may be the early one. See here. Cheers, Chris
So, being that the watch look original. I would been looking for a new Crown and the correct size tension ring and crystal? If so do you know what item numbers etc they may be, or if not how to find them?
Do you have a loupe? If so, look closely at the area under the six. You may see the tops of the Swiss Made if it is there. It might be under the tension ring.
