My First Magnetized Watch

I decided to leave the usual wallet and phone behind for an outdoor wedding this past weekend.

I brought only my driver’s license, VISA and some cash.

I used my Gruen pocket watch and wallet.

Just before the ceremony, the groom came by to thank me for the watch I gave him. He asked what I was using.

I pulled out the Gruen. It was stuck! Had not ticked since I had left the house.

I gave it a bit of a shake. I had wound it fully so the crown had no movement. It was frozen in time.

I did have my Seamaster.

When I returned home shortly before midnight the watch was running again. I set the time and got ready for bed. It quickly gained five minutes. I thought I might have set it wrong.

In the morning, I noticed the watch had gained five hours. The ticking was erratic. Quite a racket.

I bought a cheap demagnetizer a few years ago and put it away.

Why not try it? I looked on line for instructions and tried it out.

After plugging in the device, I placed the watch on it, pressed and held the button. After ten seconds, still with my finger on the button, I slowly raised the watch away from the demagnetizer.

I lifted it about 18 inches away and repeated the process.

The ticking sounds normal again and the watch is working well.

I wear this little pocket watch a lot…

Oh, and the culprit? My money clip. I made it with a baseball glove and some strong magnets. I normally just use it in my shop as a “cash register”. That’s where it will stay from now on.

The clip, with large bills on the outside, to impress the ladies! 😁

When I read the word 'wedding', I immediately jumped to, "aha, airport bag-scanner!". (not the case here, though...)
