Moving to the UK

I have a friend who is migrating to the UK next year and was asking me what are some good states to move to? He’s debating to head into Birmingham temporarily, the situation in Hong Kong is getting bad from China that the UK is welcoming them, he knows London is out window, but anything input or advice would help, thanks!

Depends what your friend wants, does he have a specialised area of work, does he want to live in a city, or in the country?

Not to cast too much shade on Birmingham, but it's not the first area I'd recommend.

He told me a city like London is expensive and he’s just your normal business guy but he doesn’t mind starting from the bottom.

Birmingham does have a healthy Chinese community, assuming he is ethnically Chinese but then so do all the other major cities. Like anywhere, with enough money you can find lovely places to live, places that would cost 3-5x the price in the SE but if you had a clean slate and no reason to go to a particular area then it’s true I might not personally look at urban Birmingham. Warwickshire or Worcs countryside maybe.

That makes sense, he’s ethnically Chinese and wants to run away from HK, he does have a background in electricity and basic utility work. He mentioned that China is moving faster to indoctrinate the HK faster than the 50 years it would had taken them to do so.

If you have a job/income and a nice house or flat most places can be ok / have parts which are ok... if you are stuck for money and /or hate your accomodation nowhere is that much fun (ok maybe if it is hot with a nice beach). If your friend needs to work I would stay flexible and see where his job search takes him. Bristol might be worth a look. There are so many Towns and Cities you need to narrow it down a bit.

PS - I just saw your recent post above - I would register with a few good job agencies and see what areas are giving him the most job options.

Barry, its in Wales. Its a fantastic town. It has good infrastructure and has a beach. Good beer and most of the people are friendly. The weather is a bit iffy but that is true of most places in the UK. Wales is much better than England. No one likes the English, half of England doesn’t like the other half. The Welsh the Scottish and the Irish don’t like any of them. I would move to Wales, except if I was English, then I would stay in England, my own half of course.

Hello, semi-Brummie boy here, I spent time there when not in boarding school in India, and also studied at BCU and worked in Birmingham for a couple of years before heading to the Middle East. Birmingham does have a large PoC/Visible Minority demographic, however the last time I visited (in Jan 2020) the general feel of the city had changed to being less friendly and more officious.

I highly feel that staring from the ground up in Birmingham would be ill-advised, the cost of living would be unteneble, I've been told that the property prices around The Mailbox (near the Chinese quarter) have increased fairly drastically. I second @lillatroll's suggestion at looking outside of England; personally I would recommend taking a look at Swansea. Large-ish Chinese crowd, decent infrastructure, lower unemployment rate, lovely people.

Difficult question to answer as for most people job location is a primary factor in choosing where to live. Having said that I would recommend Newcastle, it is a busy town with a vibrant nightlife, large student population, good infrastructure, lots of inward investment and a nice mix of old and new architecture. People are generally friendly and there is a significant Chinese population. It is rather cold, but the East side of UK is generally dryer than the west.

It might be worth pointing out that the North of England generally has cheaper housing than the south, as do the fantastic countries of Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Seconded, Newcastle is one of my favourite places, I'm back up there in a fortnight after not being able to see family through COVID - can't wait!

So in summary. Go to the West, East, North and Midlands of England (but not London). No don't they are all dicks, go to Wales, as it a Nirvana of milk and honey. No it's not Scotland is much better. No! Ireland for the win (but not specified N or S).

We are a helpful bunch are we not lol.

I would always advocate someone to consider Scotland but property prices are rocketing with no sign of it letting up.
Perhaps that is the case in the rest of the UK ?

Property prices for the whole of the UK are going up rapidly. A lot due to Covid working from home. People now questioning why should I live in a city with higher prices when I can get a better quality of life living outside the cities. I would suggest your friend tries anywhere in the UK except London and the overpriced and over crowded south east.

If London is out of the question I would recommend Edinburgh.

As Alpha says property prices have risen steeply but Edinburgh is regularly voted one of the best places to live in the UK.

The tax is slightly higher here than in England and we have a nationalist government, but apart from that life is pretty good here.
