Well first I would figure out which model it originally came with, then check the desirability and value of that model and then work backwards from there. This should then hopefully give a reasonable idea of the box value.

However knowing none of those things and never having seen this one before and to be honest having question marks over its authenticity, due to, for instance, the lack of the word Omega anywhere , I would estimate at about 50GBP.

From the bit of research I've done do so far it seems the box is from the : Omega Speedmaster professional moonwatch 20th anniversary of Apollo Xl'.
The last one I found for sale was in 2008 and that went for $300.

For the money you paid, you'd better get the watch :D

Nice box, but probably not USD 500. A standard Omega wooden box was offered on eBayfor USD 180 about 3 months ago.
I'll shovel max USD 250 for yours.

Guess I slightly overpaid for the box but given that I've never seen one come up, for sale it can only increase in price hopefully in years to come. I only purchased the box to keep my speedy in .

Steve, I don't think anyone here would earnestly offer you $250 knowing you just spent $500 for it... I'm pretty sure @Privateday7 was suggesting that he thinks fair market is around $250. Don't beat yourself up, every single one of us has purchased something, then come on here to find most people telling us we overpaid. (I don't always agree with the consensus). I'm not even going to admit to a couple of purchases because I know I overpaid an don't give a ::censored::. But since you asked, you are getting the feedback, we call it the "noob tax", and have fun with it because all of us have been there.

    Nice box, nicer watch.

Its a very nice box, I have one for my Speedy too :)

I think the medal on the top is actually made of some sort of plastic and is designed to look 'used'. I would not attempt to clean it (I did and regretted it)

Like a watch clean and leave. It will be worth more in the end.

Noob tax gets paid more if noob questions are not asked

The thread should have been Whats the going rate for a speedmaster wooden box

Nice box. Although it is a little too late for any advice as to whether or not you should have paid the amount you did. I probably wouldn't have.

Yes please don't misunderstand us. Many times I've paid top dollar for an item that I really wanted and was hard to come by. I would do it again if the "need" arose. The variables of rarity, condition, price, desire and time, all have to be weighed out for each watch or accessory. Often the decision is : " Oh f.... it, I'm buying :D ". Does not mean we won't tell you if it was high, just like we tell you if it was a steal.
Then the decision may be I'm keeping it, or I'm returning. This is a gut decision. I have no regrets with the sterling silver centenary boxes I paid a fair bit for. I'm am sure you will have no regrets with your box.:)
