This is a week late, but still interesting (it took me a while to dig it out). Here are some photos of my Dad's watch and the newspaper my mom save.

Another interesting story below the fold on the same paper.

Very interesting. I had no idea the Russians had landed Luna 15 on the moon at the same time as the Apollo astronauts were there.

Landed isn’t the right word for it. Unplanned deconstruction might be how SpaceX would describe it.

Yes, it was the first example of US - USSR communication about space. They had to make sure that there would be no collision.

    Great find.

Must have missed the launch of lunar airlines in the 80s!

    From article...
"During the historic descent to the Sea of Tranquility, the computer suddenly had a fit due to the rendezvous radar being accidentally left on."

This is not true. The radar was necessary to determine distance from surface. It was due to a power synchronization error when it was switched on, which flooded the computer with "out of range" interrupt messages...thousands of them, which overloaded the memory banks.

No surprise a contemporary report from this side of the iron curtain was wrong. I wonder if our press was knowingly fed false info to make the Soviets look worse.
