I Was speaking with one of the Rolex service centres here in the U.S., one of my watches (not a Rolex) had to be sent back for service twice in the the five months that i owned it. The watch spent more time at the service centre then on my wrist. So as i came to know this person in customer service very well on the phone. The service centre said you would not believe the way some the the Rolex's come to us. Dirt and filth in the bracelet, dirt encased where the diamonds are mounted. scratches, dings. I'm sure there are readers that are reading this thread where money has come very easy to them. Bought a Rolex for the wrong reason. I was number one on the waiting list here in Albuquerque for the new sub no date with the ceramic bezel at my Rolex dealer. it was only a few week wait. In 2015 i was in the Rolex dealer picking up my Air King and there was a lit photo of the new GMT black and blue. i said that is a stunning watch. Oh we have one in the vault, would you like to see it? sure, two days later i bought it, so i asked the owner why isn't the watch under the glass case with the rest of the Rolex's? oh we wanted the watch to go to one of our customers who will appreciate it and won't turn around this afternoon and sell it for a $1,500 profit. i always showed up on my bicycle and was allowed to bring my bike inside. Always treated with respect. That had to be a first, a customer comes in on his bicycle and buys two Rolex's. sticky beak in Albuquerque
I don't get the first half. If a Rolex comes in with filth, dirt all over, scratches, and dings, doesn't that mean the owner has worn the watch quite a bit? How is that considered someone who bought a Rolex for the wrong reason?
I agree, my wife wears her Rolex hard, it's got scratches and is always gunked up which I occasionally clean up. When it eventually goes in for service I'll rinse it off and get the easy mung off, but Rolex can do their own thing and completely clean and degrease the case and bracelet as part of the overhaul. I wouldn't expect Rolex to 'tsk tsk' the condition of the watch.
Is the OP stating that some people who have easy money don't take care of their stuff? IMO, it's not a function of easy money but more to do with the individual owner's personality and experiences. Some people just don't think much about the stuff they use daily including watches and treat them as tools. If a Rolex is your daily wear, why would you baby it? It makes sense that it should show wear.
Nice story but I really don’t get it either. Is there a question or an observation? What has the first part of the post to do with the second part? Will we ever know??
I think I understood two major theses: I'm sure that I am not one of those readers, unfortunately. I never bought any Rolex watch on a bicycle... I never bought any Rolex at all. But there might be other collectors who have done so. How about a separate thread? Something like 'How many Rolex watches did you buy on bicycle recently?'
