I'm looking at this watch and have been comparing to other 156 I can find photos of. It seems to me it's missing the word base at the top of the tachy. The print otherwise is good, but is the missing base a tell tale sign it's a redial?

Any help would be very appreciated!

Also a concern for me is the flat top 3 on the seconds ring and tachymeter versus the rounded 3s on the subdials. Is there variation between subdial font and seconds ring/tachymeter font?

Edit - attaching an example that sold from a vintage dealer with similar font differences (round 3 on the subdial and flat top 3 in the tachy/seconds ring).

The OP's dial is good. The later, reference-less cal 156s (such as the OP posts) are a different watch from the earlier ref 19518, such as bigsom posts. The later watches are a thinner case, with thinner lugs, gold second sweep hand, printed instead of embossed 'Zenith' and slightly different printing - a less lush watch, although not without its appeal.

@LouS This is super information! Thank you very much for posting it.

Is there a transitional period? Interestingly the second watch I posted has the applied Zenith logo but the rounded 3s on the subdials. If I understand you, the earlier versions should have applied Zenith logos with flat top 3s in the subdials.

    Thanks again!

This evolution - connecting the dots between the several variants of the 19518 to the later model - is work that remains to be done. Have at it!

Well it's on the wrist now! I noticed that there is a serial number on the case on the back, but the movement does not have a serial. I was trying to figure out how to date the watch by the case serial and seem to be failing. Any tips? Also looking at the inside case back i also don't see any reference numbers. The movement bridge is stamped 156D.

Here's a wrist shot from today, I posted it on WRUW as well. You can click on the image to get the full resolution.

ain't no reference number for this one. And no date table. I'm guessing 1960s, after UG cut Martel loose (so Zenith did not use the UG case marking convention of serial number and reference) but before 1969 when Zenith acquired Martel and rationalized production to the several cal 146 references.

Thanks @LouS makes sense to be in that range.

Once I had it in hand, I realized the pushers are possibly worn or plated (looking closely I really can't tell). There is some wearing on the edges, and the crown is unmarked (but with no wearing). Any thoughts on the pushers and the crown?

    Here are some photos:

There's also a 19518 with printed 'Zenith' and applied logo like mine below,

Well busy is good, better than bored! Congrats on the new kid, just another excuse to purchase a watch, to be given to the kid when he/she turns 18 ;)

I realize the thread is old, but I thought I’d share something interesting.

I recently acquired one of these. I only purchased it after researching it quite a bit. I noticed that at the top of the dial the word “base” has simply oxidized/aged/worn away. On my example you can see it was, at one point, on the dial. I suspect this is what happen with the OP’s watch.

    Will post photos this weekend.
