Crazy money....I really sometimes wonder who these Omega whales are.... They certainly don't seem to waste their time on forums!
It certainly seems a huge price increase from recent sales, however the military SM300 has long been undervalued.
I see Bonhams have a couple of milspec Rolex subs in their June 10th auction. Suspect they'll make this seem cheap.
Hi @LarryG What makes this milspec dial better than other milspec dials. It's certainly very clean but I wouldn't have thought that it was that much nicer than others I've viewed. Thanks
Any which way I look at it €35k is a ludicrous amount to pay for a 165.024. For the same money you could buy a handful of 2913´s and I know which I´d rather be wearing.
Agree wholeheartedly. I was interested until the bidding hit £8k. It's much like Comex on a Rolex, I just don't get the crazy prices.
I've never attended an auction in person. i'm a little more curious who is paying the insane prices. don't get me wrong, i've paid more than market value to obtain a watch i've wanted several times (negligible supply + high demand = no bargaining power). just a touch more curious since prices at these auctions (especially Phillips) seem insane. Plus, some of the sold pieces have not been exemplary.
I don't know about this auction specifically, but it is not hard to understand if you think about how much money people have. Let's say a guy has a net worth of $100MM (and there are a LOT of those guys, crazy as it sounds). Most of those guys have access to good investment opportunities, but for round numbers assume that they make a 10% annual yield on their net worth (this is just for discussion so don't criticize the assumption). That is $10MM a year of additional spending capacity (ignoring taxes). Overpaying on a watch by $20k is not even a rounding error. Look at art prices, vintage Ferrari prices, etc. Same issue. Or look at what Steve Ballmer paid for the Clippers; his price was several hundred million dollars more than the next highest bid, which was also from rich guys. With Ballmer's net worth, it really didn't matter.
I believe the 12 dial and small T (regardless of position) makes this one rare among the Omega MilSpeedos, though I too was stunned by the hammer price. But I've been surprised by a lot of hammer prices lately.
