I bought this mainly because it looks interesting to me and liked the case, but I'm wondering is it worth anything more than the material in it?

Definitely an uncommon design and model, but not one that is in demand amongst collectors. So, the answer to your question is that it has modest value.

 

I still like it. I've seen a few with the case(bezel?) embellished using different classic goldworking patterns.
