It’s been a while since we reported about a Speedmaster sighting by a celebrity. In the past, we have seen Russel Crowe wearing one in many of his movies. He also had a Speedmaster in his private collection until recently. He auctioned numerous personal memorabilia away, including the watch, to…well, pay for his divorce. WOW! Interesting! I am a huge fan of Mark Knopfler's music, collected all his album in vinyl LP -- Dire Straits, his individual releases, and OSTs done by him. He's a great artist!
I remember that last year he made a charity auction of mainly military watches, so it doesn’t really surprise me he sometimes wears it on a NATO. http://www.mwrforum.net/forums/show...n-s-charity-watch-auctions&highlight=Knopfler Edit to add... I see it was discussed on here too. https://omegaforums.net/threads/end...earts-childrens-charity-watch-auctions.54368/
Here's another one @Robert-Jan, Jeff Bezos wearing a modern Omega Speedmaster: Source: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6512369435876167681
Nice post! I'm definitely a fan of his music. Good to know that Mark shares the same passion towards the Speedy!
Mark Knopler is selling a part of his guitar collection through Christies and in video interviews he has nice straight-lug Speedmaster. Does anybody know is it a 2998 or 105.002? Hour and minute hands are not white. What do you think? https://www.christies.com/stories/mark-knopfler-guitar-collection-a9058db914514f9b83516d99ff7c15f4
There's something kind of cool seeing the Speedmaster on the wrist of Bezos in the photo a few posts above mine. The guy has a wealth of $180 billion but is choosing to wear a humble plastic crystal manually wound watch that literally anyone can walk into a shop and purchase.
While anyone might be able to walk into the shop, not everyone can purchase. I’m blessed beyond what I deserve and still consider a Speedmaster an extravagance…one that I’ll likely splurge for some day. It is a want, not a need. I grew up in a family that struggled to get by, and it wasn’t because my parents were lazy. Quite the opposite, they worked hard and still struggled, with some months better than others. Many in my neck of the woods are great, hard working people who still struggle to pay bills, put food on the table, keep a car running, and make ends meet. Hat tip to Bezos for choosing a quality watch when he could afford far more. That still doesn’t put a speedy within reach of many in this world.
