I didn't know that.
Is there any 'story' behind Omega adding the blue?
Not sure when or why they added the blue. This thread from 2006 (if you can follow it) discusses this dial, and as of 2006 (while in the process of writing what would eventually become A Journey Through Time) Marco Richon was unaware of its existence. http://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/how-many-mark-iv-owners-23447.html
The part number listed in the thread matches the part number I provided, and matches what is found in the Omega extranet as available, and matches the service records of multiple known blue dials installed by Omega in Bienne including mine. So there's no doubt that it is legit and is the service dial still used. Richon's doubt suggests that there was no blue variant original to the 1970s.
how would one get a hold of one. ofrei is out and cousins does not show this blue dialed one?
Well, sending in a 176.009 with a damaged dial to Omega for service will do it. There are a few listed for sale on eBay but they are sealed in Omega packaging so I can't confirm they are the blue variant but the part number matches.
