Alex Honnold is likely the best known rock climber in the world, partly due to his many accomplishments, and in no small part to the film Free Solo, in which he stars. Magnus Midtbø is a high-class climber from Norway, and has a popular Youtube channel. He recently visited the U.S., met Alex, and put up a video of a free solo climb that they shared near Las Vegas. It is a remarkable video in many respects, and well-worth watching in HD on a larger screen.

I very much like to climb...on trails. 😁 I am awed by the skill and (especially) courage that it takes to free solo. Watching Magnus overcome his fears, and the brilliance of Alex's "coaching", is a real treat.

My wife used to climb and just loves watching this stuff. I will watch it if I'm in the right mood, but Alex Honnold just turns me off. After seeing Free Solo, I found myself really disliking the way he treats other people, and I don't enjoy him any more, even though his climbing is obviously extremely impressive. Something in his brain is just not right IMO.

As you probably know, the people doing this stuff don't have a long life expectancy, and many of the most famous and skilled free solo climbers have died in falls. They have no fear and seem invincible, until something goes wrong one day and they die.

He largely comes off well in this video, but related to your other points, with which I agree, had Magnus died that day, it would have in a sense been due to Alex's lack of fear, and ability to coax others into that space.

the way honnold talks to magnus and remarks how relaxing talking during that process is, while he climbs and operates a camera is just enough to make me feel so unconfortable. and i believe magnus is not feeling great while doing this. I always wonder if these folks have the fear inhibited in their brains, as i don t think that experience takes it away. it has to be something you born with.

Yes, Honnold's amygdala does not function normally, IIRC. This is covered in the Free Solo movie and has been widely publicized.
