For best result try to take some shots in daylight instead of inside with a modest light source :)

    The SM300 looks awesome btw!

Will do! It's nighttime over here so I had to settle for indoor shots.

Thanks for the tip. Will play around with it some more. Using the macro function made me miss taking macro shots using an actual SLR though.

Astonishing! That really is revelatory - in normal viewing you're completely unaware of all these beautiful contrasting textures.

I find with macro photography you can really appreciate the amount of work and detail that goes into making these watches. Things that you would otherwise need a loupe to see!

With the gap between my photography skills and the standard shown by competitors in @Darlinboy 's 2018 photo contest self-evident, Santa offered to help me lift my game for next year's competition with a macro / wide-angle / telephoto lens set for my iphone, just unwrapped and trialled. This is hand-held in natural light:

I’ve never seen a macro kit for iPhones before, seems to work really well! Did you take that picture in natural light or indoor lighting?

The shot was taken in natural light at my desk next to a window, light coming mostly from one direction. The lens kit is not specifically for iphone’s, they are just clip-on lenses, and it’s an entry level set from a local retail chain. There are of course even cheaper no-brand products on eBay.
