Lume Shots

I've been going through my watches, taking lume shots that I'd like you to see. I would have attached this to an existing thread, but searching "lume" on the site finds nothing and searching "site: omegaforums.net lume" finds threads complaining about poor lume or relume but nothing showing off a nice lume shot.

I got this tickle when I was shining a UV light on some of my watches, along with taking some macro shots with an Olympus Tough Guard 6, set on aperture priority and an exposure time of maybe a second (based on the seconds hand on the watches that were running). Here's the setup (the light at the left is a soft UV light similar in function to a hippy light):

Here's a TAG Aquaracer that really pops:

Without UV:

Now for something in the Omega range - A Seamaster Planet Ocean Chrono in titanium:

UV on:

UV off:

You can really see the difference between the BGW9 and C5.

More to follow.

Hi Dave, connas a tatu?

Very nice lume pics so far, please show us more "lume candy". I love lume pics and sure hope your thread grows to a Grand Lume Thread.
If I remember well, there exists a lume thread in OF called something like "aka lume thread", or something like that. This thread convinces me that my next purchase will not be a watch, it will be a tripod!

Hope many others feel inspired to the lume and delight us with grand pics like yours.

Sloan g'foal.

^^ That lumed Speedy bezel is fantastic.

Geez, I don't know how I missed the other identically named thread. Maybe the mods can merge the two.

Hell, if they really are the gods that make sticks fly (Call of the Wild, somewhat recent remake) they can hook both treads up with the one Standy linked to. I really don't know how I missed other Lume theads other than my search results didn't show anything. God knows if the search daemons were resting or I couldn't handle an interface or what?

BTW, I saw a nice meme about using various web tools vs vim vs emacs.

Unfortunately, I learned vi early in my UNIX days and while trying to expand, I've never been able to pick up emacs. I see compatriots banging away on emacs, particularly perusing file systems and bringing up alternate files in the same window, but my finger memory just can't click. I've tried and tried to learn it but never was successful.

Archer, if you are reading this, count your blessings. It is painful that I will never learn to speak Vulcan. You will never have the need (I think, and honestly, hope).

Hi Dave, connas a tatu?

Sloan g'foal.

I'm good, but I don't understand the last line and google translate is no help.

Gotta say, I was probably a bit misleading in my valediction. My only experience with Irish and Ireland is a few weeks I spent there working on a manufacturing project back in the nineties. I was there long enough to learn a few phrases but not long enough to learn much. And, everyone I worked with spoke English quite well. But we drank in Gaelic!

I didn't get much into the Gaeltacht, but I loved the cadence on the Gaelic radio stations. I thought "If this is a language I'd like to learn, then it would slide off the tongue as well as any. One of our workmates (from here in the states) wife was related to some in Gaeltacht; it was quite interesting to hear her talk to the folks.

But it was also interesting to hear my FIL talk to Japanese relatives in Japanese. In my mind it sounded fluent but afterwards, he said that he'd forgotten so much.

I was looking for a nice unusual signature and our drinking salute popped into my mind. Over on WUS, I keep a three line signature that expresses my three most recent amusing thoughts. A new one goes on the bottom and the oldest one gets tossed. One of my recent favorites (now tossed) "Collecting watches is better than hookers and blow. Well, blow anyway"

Smashing idea!

I'll have to try this. I use a special UV wavelength pen light to hunt for oil leaks on aircraft engines and accessory cases...never thought about using it for lighting some lume!

Thank you for sharing the results and the idea👍

^^ So you are saying that aircraft engine oil has a marker added. That's a great idea but man, that must be a whole lotta marker.

It means "go with luck."

Sorry, I took my conclutions too quick. I took you for Irish. But am glad you tasted the Irish life a bit. Drinking is a sure way to meet friends and get to know the culture better over there.

Your lume pics are grand!!!!

There is a dye added but it has no appreciable effect on performance. It's particularly useful since jet fuel does NOT have the same response under UV light. Helps narrow the search. Avgas or 100LL (LL stands for low lead) is died blue so you don't need anything but your God-given eyeballs to spot stains from a fuel leak in airplanes that burn the blue juice.

Crappy iPhone shot, but it captures the experience. This is a Ball Watch Co Fireman Racer NM2088C-S2J-WHBE, which (typical of Ball) uses Tritium gas tubes in lieu of lume. Some might find that a bit schticky, but I really love the look of the watch (in the daylight), and it’s cool that there’s no need to charge lume: it’s all self-powered. I’m often out fishing at zero-dark-whatever and that’s a useful feature.

Plus, you know, the name of the company makes for all kinds of stupid jokes.

Have you contacted Ball about what they'll do when the tritium in the tubes are dead? I loved my Stocker and Yale 590 but when they got out of the military contracting business, I was stuck for servicing. microtec makes a similar watch but I never found out whether the parts fit because I decided to just sell the watch instead. I kind of regret that because Marathon's version is HUGE.

I haven’t contacted them myself (brand new watch with a good 25+ years of decent glow left, from what I understand), but based on what I’ve read, they will (for a couple hundred bucks) replace the tubes when needed. This assumes, of course, that they’re still in business and servicing old watches then.

Anyway, hard to say how long we end up owning certain pieces. I’m not in any hurry to sell this one, as I’ve connected with it and I get real use out of it. Plus, as a Cleveland native, I relate to the company history, even if the current Ball Co has little to do with its Cleveland roots beyond a merely aesthetic connection. But I can imagine a day when I decide to part with this to fund a new watch (or a guitar, or a boat, or a bike, or a kayak, or a vacation, or...). So I guess I’m not super worried about the issue. 😀

^^ Super Luminova on a GMT Master? I thought they ended production in the Tritium days.

Quick check on the dink says they switched in '97 and ended in '99. Good choice.

Playing with the UV light on a tritium dial. it’s kind of bad lighting
