    Probably not called a dent.
I didn't want to hijack a thread where this was pointed out.
IIRC, the "ding" on the 10 o'clock lug (always?/often?) denotes a (Swiss?/foreign?) watch imported to Portugal. I guess I'm not really sure, but I can look it up.
My question is: do collectors view this mark as acceptable? Or do collectors avoid such examples?

Analogous to a gold hallmark, so shouldn't be a detriment to desirability.

+1 does not detract from the value only from aesthetics IMO...

I like the mark, especially if the watch is being sold from Portugal.
It certainly doesn't harm the value IMO, if I saw two identical models I would prefer the one with the interesting little mark, in fact some watches need the mark.

Nice one, Michael - very apt in this case I agree:thumbsup:

It is another piece of the life story of the watch - no detriment at all in my eyes, even when it is not a Portuguese.

It does strike me as a fairly odd decision on the part of the Portuguese government. Why couldn't this have been put on the back of the lug, or the side of the case? Were the Portuguese cops really doing spot checks on the street?

I had a speedmaster mark ii with the mark on the side of the case in between the pusher and crown.
I got the following info from the IWC forum>

"The Portuguese import stamp was usually placed on the upper side of left upper lug. This location was chosen so the tax inspectors could easily see the importation tax had been paid"
    Thanks Mick

Another example of the Portugese "bashings" between the crown and pusher. I purchased this 1040 from Portugal.

So why can't the damn Portuguese put their friggin' ding mark on the UNDERSIDE of the lugs? ::confused2::

Down here we've been joking about the Portuguese way of doing things for the past five centuries. :D

On one hand its cool that it ties these vintage pieces to their background but are they still doing it? To me it'd be a bit like if I bought a BMW and someone had taken a whack at the front fender with a hammer...

Thought I would dig up this old thread to give you a laugh.

After a few months of searching I found this pre-owned Constellation case on eBay and decided to buy.
On receiving the case I was disappointed to find a small dent in the top left lug.

It didn’t cost a great deal so i thought hey-ho not much lost let’s wait for a better example. A couple of weeks later imagine my delight when I found a NOS case on eBay.

It arrived today and guess what ……… same “dented” top left lug.

After searching OF I came across this thread........ oh well you live and learn!

Moral of the story; don’t buy a Portuguese case unless you can live with a hallmark stamped in the lug!

Why should they if the Portuguese don't mind?

I have quite a few watches brought from Portugal, I don't mind the seal in the slightest, I rather like it actually.
