Calling all Watch-Idiot-Savants, WIS Wanna-Bees, Watch Geeks, Freaks & Nerds (and anyone even mildly interested in or knowledgeable about watches) in the Los Angeles metro area: How 'bout a Late-Autumn Get-Together? I have the green light from Mrs. Jones to host just such a gathering at our modest but hospitable home, located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley (near the crossing of Highway 101 and the 405 Freeway). We live in a small, gated community, which provides the security we'd want for such a gathering. Our family schedule constrains us to two possible dates for a GTG between now and the end of 2017: Sunday, November 12th (the Veterans Day holiday weekend in the US) OR Sunday, November 19th (the weekend before the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend in the US) The GTG would likely be set to run from about 2pm to 5pm. In the event we get more than a dozen or so interested individuals (I told Mrs. Jones we could expect 2-12 guests), we would have to limit attendees to the first twelve with firm RSVPs. You can let me know here (this thread) or via Private Message whether you'd be interested in participating. I'll get back to you individually with further details. Please indicate which of the these two dates would be your preference (and which you cannot do, if that is the case). It's surprising to me how few GTGs seem to be held in the L.A. area, so let's fix that. Hopefully we'll generate enthusiasm for more in the future! Cheers! Richard
There are still seats at the table! [see above] Here's some detail from the photo above. You just never know what you'll see in L.A.
Seats at the table are filling but there's still room for more! I know these events are often held at bars and restaurants, so if anyone is sitting on the fence because they're worried that essential elements such as food and spirits will be missing -- DO NOT FEAR!!! Mrs. Jones and I would never leave our guests dry or hungry. I can promise there will be abundant libations and yummy bits that will suit most anyone's taste I'll update everyone next early week on which of the two dates (Nov 12th and Nov 19th) will work for the largest number of of participants.
The life is away the weekend of the 12th. So I think I can make that date. Should we bring Speedmasters?
Awesome! Your responses are noted @Taddyangle , @2ar2c1 , @Looneytoons . I'll provide an update later this week regarding the direction we seem to be heading for the date.
I don't mean to hi-jack the thread but here are a couple after it landed was towed over city streets. This is on Manchester Blvd just before going over the bridge over the 405 fwy:
I'm thrilled with the interest shown so far, and ...if they show up... there will be some very special collections (and collectors) to see & meet. There are still seats at the table so don't delay -- reserve yours today! Here's how things are looking date-wise as of last night. You'll have to excuse my nerdiness, but as a scientist I have to go about this quantitatively. I won't make a final date choice until about Nov 1st, but I thought you ought to know how things were looking. Green = Probably Yes; Yellow = Maybe; Red = Probably No; Blank = No Information. Greens get two points, Yellows get one point. So right now, we're leaning toward Nov 12th.
Hi, I might be interested if free either weekend. Also, I took those same photos from the Griffith Observatory!
Just found this thread. Very much interested. Open to both proposed dates. As a former resident of SF valley who spent too much time playing muni golf at encino balboa, would enjoy very much revisiting my old hangout area.
Your interest is noted @rohnin and @EatMan ! Stay tuned to this channel. I might as well post up a couple more Endeavour photos since this has become a sub-theme of this thread. The day before Endeavour was due to land at LAX (at the end of a cross-country flight) a local news organization leaked the planned flight path over the L.A. metro area; I plotted the path over a Google Earth image and found a single location in a remote corner of Griffith Park that would be crossed five times. Early in the morning of arrival day I hiked cross-country, packing a heavy tripod, two cameras, and a bunch of lenses to this difficult-to-reach spot. What I neglected to consider is that I would actually be too close to Endeavour to get shots that included iconic Los Angeles landmarks and the aircraft in the same frame. The first photo below was taken with a fairly wide angle lens, which should give you an idea of just how close I was; the sound of the 747 and escort aircraft passing directly overhead was deafening.
Hi. I would be interested in attending, but unfortunately can only do the 19th. So write me in for a definite 19th. Thank you
Hey there! Sorry for not getting back to you closer to Nov 1st to confirm the date for this GTG -- I spent most of the last week off the grid and didn't have reliable Internet access. Anyway, the date and time are set for Sunday, November 12th, from 2pm to 5pm PST, at the location described above. For those who expressed an interest in attending but could only make the 19th -- my apologies -- but the 12th works best for the larger number of prospective participants. Not to worry, though -- barring some catastrophe at this GTG, I'm confident Mrs. Jones and I would be inclined to organize another one in early 2018. I will be contacting each of you individually to confirm your interest and to provide details on the location. For those who are relative newcomers to this Forum, be advised beforehand that I will guide you through a modest vetting process (standard procedure for a gathering such as this). Also, there are still a couple of seats left at the table, so if you're interested and able to make the date please let me know as soon as possible. Looking forward to seeing y'all next weekend!
Hi, Andy from San Diego. Anybody else making a drive? It would be kind of cool, and I hope I would be able to contribute to the meet. Regards
