Looking for Expertise on My Grandfathers Omega Constellation Pie Pan

All, I am new to the forum as of today and I have been collecting watches for over 30 years. I had not yet to venture into Omegas but today found a watch that was my grandfathers while going through some old genealogy papers. I was born in 1968 and can remember my grandfather wearing this watch. I believe it’s the 1960s vintage omega Constellation two-tone “Pie-Pan”. Thanks to some of the threads here I do believe it’s original and it is still fully functioning. I believe the model is 168.005. He obviously purchased it to be a daily wear time piece, as you can see it is clearly worn. The band is obviously not the original and says Speidel, USA on the back of the bracelet.

I am not aware of it ever being officially serviced, and quite frankly I’m amazed that it still works perfectly.

I am very interested in the following ...

    Estimate of the value?

Who you would recommend me sending it to for service?

How much restoration should I do for a time piece that I will not be selling but keeping in my collection to wear occasionally and hand down to my son.

What would have been the original band?

If I send it to a omega service center, will they replace the missing crown, polish the glass, and replace the band? I wanted to be a vintage collectors watch.

I am not interested in cutting corners on cost, but I do like good value but expect high quality of work. I want it done right, and there are no Omega Service Centers in Oh. The closest centers are in Canada, New Jersey and New York City.

Thank you in advance for your help. Sorry for all the pictures but wanted to be sure the experts hear had what they need to get a good idea of condition.

That is a very nice Constellation in barn find condition.

You need a crown and stem. Stems are easy to find. The correct thin 10-sided crown was discontinued by Omega years ago. They are almost impossible to find today. Omega does not have them and uses a designated replacement part.

The crystal may polish up OK. If you want to replace it, you should be able to.

Any competent watchmaker with experience with vintage watches should be able to service the movement. They should be able to source most of the routine parts like stems, crystals and mainsprings.

Do not send it to Omega. They will charge you $1,000 and will want to replace parts with incorrect replacements.

I would not waste hundreds on an Omega OEM watchband. Get a Keleran USA alligator or crocodile band for around $30 on eBay.

Original buckles from the 1960’s may be found on eBay as well. There is lengthy thread here about buckles and what to look for.

When all fixed up, there typically fetch $1,000 to $1,500 depending on condition.

    Hope this helps,

The only possible things to add are to make sure the watchmaker does not repaint the dial or replace the hands and if he suggests this then find another watchmaker! Similarly any polishing of the case should be no more than a light rub with a Cape Cod cloth, the scratches were made by your grandfather in his daily wear.

Nice watch, nothing else to advise as @gatorcpa has given you the goods

Will mention if you can put up with a modern buckle you can walk into or call any Omega Boutique and they will have a new Omega buckle ( saves the fake mind field of eBay )

    Welcome @Crackin4
What a great find and what a great intro to Omega watches.
Lovely sharp case and a nice dial.
Serial puts it at around 64/65.
A polished or new crystal will do wonders for your watch.
Have it repaired and serviced and enjoy wearing it.

I would add that you should stop wearing it - although it may seem to be working perfectly, the rotor is clearly rubbing the inside of the case back. This is generally a sign that the watch has been worn well past the time it should have been serviced. In my experience this can lead to many parts needing replacement. This will need more than a stem, crown, mainspring, and crystal...

    Cheers, Al

All. Thank you so much for your help and comments. I will definitely keep it safe until I find a good competent watch repair in Dayton or Cincinatti.

I will post pictures once received back.
