Looking for a way to avoid PayPal’s conversion fees!

Hi all!
I live in EU and have some USD on my PayPal account I’d like to convert to €.
Paypal’s conversion fees are extremely high compared to wise for example so I’ve been trying to find a way to turn around their system.
I have a wise multi currency account I registered on paypal but even there, Pp is trying to force the conversion and won’t let me transfer USD.
I tried calling their hotline and they told me that as I had a French account, every withdrawal will necessarily be in €. After telling them it was nothing but a scam, the person I had on the phone told me my best option would be to create a us paypal account, send the money there, then to wise…But creating a us paypal is a pain without a phone number…

Has anyone ever successfully resolved this question? For the info, on about 4k Usd, their rate is a whole 200€ less than what wise would give…

open to ideas if anyone has a guess!
Thanks!

PayPal is pretty smart and they do not leave fee money on the table.

One possible solution might be to open a U.S. based bank account to hold US dollar transfers outside of PayPal. Assuming that PayPal will even open a US account for you, you could transfer money by ACH for free to a U.S. bank account, then transfer those funds to Wise.

Unless you are already a customer of a U.S. bank overseas, or with a non-US bank with an extensive presence here, you will likely find it extremely difficult to set up a U.S. bank account. Banks here have to comply with very strict “know your customer” laws and most banks will charge large fees to transfer funds via SWIFT.

So I’m afraid that it will be quite difficult to do what you are proposing via bank transfers.

I do not know whether if you are successful setting up a U.S. PayPal account if you could get a PayPal US dollar based credit or debit card to which you can transfer funds. Even so, I suspect there will be fees for transfers out to Wise.

Trying to beat a bank out of fees is like trying to beat the house edge at a casino.

Good luck,

Maybe you can just gradually spend it down. Or buy something for a friend, and have them reimburse you by Wise.

Conversion fees or conversion rate?
The rate is where they get you. I use an Amex and it bypasses PayPal currency conversions.

Have you asked Wise? Seems like if there was a way around it they'd know. They have that debit card, but it's still tied to your account. No ideas here but definitely curious to learn if this is possible.

This is the answer - better find new watch 👍

😁 I’ve been doing that for some time but the watch I’d like to buy now is in €

paypal has their « official » conversion rate, already higher than regular banks, but adds a hidden fee of about 3% to any conversion so the total is just unbearable once you’ve compared…
