I have several occasions every year to attend a black tie event and I am looking for a suitable watch. The watch I want would have these characteristics: Larger than 37mm case Black dial with gold hands and markers 14k or18k yellow or rose gold, solid or plated Manual wind, automatic or quartz Black leather strap $2000 +/- budget No complications beyond second hand (no date or chronos) Here are a couple pictures of watches that come close, so that you get the idea. The biggest challenge seems to be finding one that is larger than 37mm. Both examples below are 34-35mm - just too small for my wrist. I have been all over Ebay, WUS and the other watch sites and I keep looking. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks, Pete
I wear my Gruen techni-quadron. Doesn't meet your dimensional requirement, but it does stay hidden under the french cuff...
The excuses we use to justify buying a new watch. Kidding aside, the best answer is to not wear a watch. If you want to wear a watch, then wear what you want to.
This is my secret. As for the OP, I think UG Polerouter(don't think it meets all requirements) with a black dial would look great with a tux. I'm going to hunt for one for a wedding next summer.
I think that Hamilton is beautiful and perfect for the stated purpose of wearing with a tux a couple of times a year.
Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster 300 ... perhaps even on a NATO strap. My logic is, if it's good enough for Sean Connery or Daniel Craig, it's good enough for me.
Thank you all for your comments. Several good suggestions here, particularly that Hamilton. I spend a day this week browsing all the watch shops in NYC. I did the perfect tuxedo watch - a Patek, but alas it was $18,000!! Interestingly, I stoped by the Tissot Boutique that they had a watch that fit the bill within my budget. Here's a pic. Just wish it didn't have the date. Considering it...
@ctpete, both a seconds hand and a date...you are breaking your own rules! Bravo. These days, if it doesn't have a battery you are doing pretty well. I'd go with a Cellini.
Geezus H Khryst! If I hear that bullshit reasoning again I might have to ban the lot of you. oh, wait........ I can't do that anymore. Carry on!
Yes, you are correct. This would certainly be a compromise. And I would love the Celini, but its pricey and mostly its too small.
Here's one that meets all my requirements. Have to consider this also. But certainly a lesser watch it is!
A thin time only is the thing to wear with a tux. I don't get the no watch rule. But I'd wear any of my gold UG dress Chrono's with one or my Connie.
