Change the subject to 'Inherited Longines - help needed' and you might get some more hits. A little bit of a back story would be nice too :)

That's a caliber 290 inside, which was used from 1959 through 1967. However, the dial doesn't appear to match the usual look of a watch from those years. I'd like to see a nice close-up of the dial. Also, can you find the serial number on the movement? That will determine what year it was made. The numbers on the inside of the caseback would help too.

Hi the numbers are 291 which I presume is the Caliber
And the serial number on the move mentioned is 11233901

The movement's serial number puts it at 1960. The 291 should have a date window - the 290 was without a date. However, we have seem some strange things come from Longines between 1958 and 1960, specifically with the 29x series where calibers had the wrong number on them. Another explanation is that different parts may have been used to repair the watch over it's lifespan. I'm still not 100% sure that the dial hasn't been repainted sometime.

That would be the number on the inside of the caseback.

Why '58 to '60..... were they in finacial straights then or perhaps ruled by some satanic spirit of Timexdom???

Can't answer why; I just know it happened. We've seen several examples of 291's with 294 stamped on them. The 294 was the power reserve model. Longines even confirmed this happened after Anders badgered them for info.
