This was announced at Basel but it seems to have flown under the radar. It is due in the shops soon. A lot to like to my eyes, good size , vintage vibe, nice price and no date ......Yay. Between this and the Heritage 1945 .....Longines will get my money.
Me thinks it might tread to close to longines big brothers signature watch. But yeah I agree it sticks out in a bad way.
I quite like the dial. And while there is certainly some Type 20 in there, I think they were probably going more for this JLC.
It's a nice chronograph for a while indeed. Longines is quite reliable now again. I may buy this beauty.
Some nice hands-on photos by the friendly blokes at Time & Tide: http://timeandtidewatches.com/hands-on-eyes-on-the-prize-the-longines-avigation-bigeye/ I have a big emotional pull for Longines. My parents gave me a beautiful grey/silver dial quartz Longines when I was thirteen. Together with my love for aviation, I think this might be on my shortlist for 2018. At 14.5mm thick (source: http://wornandwound.com/introducing-longines-avigation-bigeye-chronograph/), it is only slightly thicker than a Speedy Pro and also does not have the excessive polish that put me off some of the previous Longines L688.2 calibre chronograph efforts.
Some gorgeous photos from Horbiter...this one is really growing on me. https://www.horbiter.com/en/longines-heritage-avigation-big-eye-watch-hands-on/ If I do take a family trip with my family next year to the UK...we might visit Farnborough airshow (would be the 4th time time with my Dad), but this time my 80+ father will be with his grandchildren...well this might be a unique opportunity to buy and wear this watch...perhaps for both of us
I saw this one a while ago in an article when Longines made the announcement. I quite like it. Great size and great price. @Myron - Amazing LeCoultre, buddy! What year is it from and what's the case size?
Certainly many brands have had Type 20 dial watches...hunting around I found this image from the Longines Museum. Apparently this is a Longines pilot watch from 1971...the new release looks pretty much identical IMO. That's a good find from their museum. Great reissue from Longines. Anyone seen one in the shop yet? I looked around at a retailer during my lunch break today with no luck for this and heritage 1945.
Well the heritage 1945 should have been released by now as it was one of the key Longines pieces for Basel 2017 and received significant fanfare and exposure, especially with the Ben Clymer association. I imagine that Longines must have had some reason to keep the Avigation Big Eye tucked away during Basel...perhaps to avoid stealing the fanfare from some other releases? Well now that the Avigation Big Eye has been officially released, I think it would be crazy for Longines to miss out on the sales opportunities during Q4 (i.e. Xmas and end year bonus payments)...especially with a watch that offers such an excellent value proposition + has been preselected for the chronograph section of the 2017 GPHG http://www.gphg.org/horlogerie/en/watches/longines-avigation-bigeye I will be on the lookout for the '"Big Eye" during some upcoming business trips to the US and Canada.
- Amazing LeCoultre, buddy! What year is it from and what's the case size? Actually, I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know. I found it in another thread on another forum! But I will say I really like this Longines and I hope to pick one up in 2018. Myron
