Eric Wind's "what's-selling-where" column is always a great read, and his taste is very similar to mine. I appreciate the way he often chooses watches according to what "speaks to" him, and how he spreads a good appreciation of unpolished cases, among other qualities that novices might not know about. Is he also spreading another kind of "appreciation"? Check out the Longines 5391 he highlights here: http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/from-a-lecoultre-deep-sea-alarm-on-ebay-to-a-crazy-vintage-b. I agree that it is a beauty, and Nomos-esque in that it kind of resembles the Nomos Club: http://www.nomos-glashuette.com/the-watches/club/ But wow, it just sold for $1067.69? http://www.ebay.com/itm/151629223350?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:ITPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network Granted, there's a currency conversion from British pounds, but really? Is that watch worth that much? Or how about this Omega Seamaster that Eric highlighted last year: http://www.ebay.com/itm/231421856199?roken2=ti.pQmVuamFtaW4gQ2x5bWVyIA==Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/whats-selling-where-10-ebay-finds I mean, is that an almost $2000 watch? It raises interesting questions. Eric Wind is clearly a connoisseur, and is apparently providing a service for people who have enough money not to care about values but perhaps do not have the time to troll eBay, and want advice on good watches. He does help people appreciate vintage watches, and if sellers make a few extra bucks, is that so bad? Does any of this even matter?
Whenever these 'recommendations' show up, the price of the watch goes up. Happens here too. Didn't we question quite a few of these Hodinkee recommended watches in the past? I seem to remember several that were less than kosher.
I thought the skyrocketing price of DON bezels was directly a result of OF members commenting on and linking to eBay listings for them.
Yes, and to Eric Wind's credit, when that happens he has, at least in several cases that I know of, acknowledged the questions, and in a few cases even followed up and had the questionable items removed from auction.
@Frunkinator, it means Dot Over 90. It's a characteristic of older speedies. Spacefruit has the answers, http://speedmaster101.com/overview/
There is deff a "eric wind" factor but he points out some great watches and that research takes time like adam said. If its approved by him, you know its going to be a good buy.
