Hello all. Can someone confirm where the serial number would be located on a Speedmaster Professional manufactured in the 1974-1976 timeframe? Am I correct that it would likely be found on the movement and not on the back of a lug or the caseback? Thanks!

On the movement only. The caseback has the model.

If your really nice we might even be able to tell you from clear pictures of the dial.

Umm that was not manufactured in the 74-76 timeframe. Did you mean 37m rather than 27m?

I received the watch in 1976 as a gift. I assumed that it was manufactured at about that time. The info above comes straight from the Omega boutique on 5th Avenue in NYC. I had the watch serviced a few months back (cleaning and maintenance of the movement). I emailed them after my initial post and asked them if they had the serial number and that’s the info I got back. So, what do I have exactly? Not that it really matters. It was a gift from my parents, both of whom are gone now, and I would never sell it.

37 would make more sense. That equates to an 861 manufactured in 1975-1976, which is what I think I have. Perhaps the response from Omega was a typo?

Is the omega logo printed in white or metal on the dial?

Given that the number provided by the OB is clearly wrong, I don't think I would be confident in the serial number without actually looking.

Agreed, but I think that padders suggestion that the serial number probably begins with 3 instead of 2 makes sense. At this point, I’m not inclined to open the caseback just to find out. I know that I received the watch in 1976. The 277... serial number would indicate a manufacturing date in 1969 and that seems very unlikely.

Yes, correct on the dial. The bezel is the original, but not the dial unfortunately.

The later models had the serial number on the lug, but hey as you say, you know when you got the watch. Not many people with one that old are the original owner!! Nice.

Yes, hard to believe that I’ve owned it for 42+ years, but I still love it. It was my daily wearer for decades, but I baby it now more than I used to and just wear it on the weekends. SMPc Monday through Friday.
