A bog standard, black dialed Sei Tacche with movement issues (listed as "defect") reached €1,000 incl. of fees in an auction in Scandinavia a week or so ago... I don't get it. Nice watches, but hardly rare?

Excellent ! 😎

To be fair most lot estimates are optimistic

My 5193 shipped to Brazil in 1944 and got a salmon hue from the tropic
I like this! Dibs! But not at 8k though. 😁
And if the Philips one reaches 8k, a number of us must be millionnaires right now.

I noticed on IG that omegaenthusiast listed 4-5 sei tacches yesterday, they are/were offered at neither 8k nor 800

Dealers tend to charge 3 times what a watch is worth on the auction/ collectors market so if the watch is worth 650 they will charge 2k for it...

If they can get 2k for it, that is what it is "worth". Lot of members here seems to forget this simple fact. Auction houses and dealers offers a different purchase experience and can realize a higher value than a private collector upon a sale.

"Worth" is a meaningless concept. It is all tulips.

Whether the watch in in OP will sell or not at the estimate will be interesting to see. It is surprisingly high, I'll admit that.

No ... we didn't forget. Why don't you just go ahead and say "it's worth whatever someone will pay for it." I don't think that's been posted yet in this thread and it's always such a pleasure to read such novel and sophisticated reasoning.

That's right.
In a fair auction, it takes 2 bidders to up the price. In a dealer's shop, only one potential buyer is needed.

But the dial dial is a cavalcade of subtle details. Are you blind????

I think you’ve missed the point entirely...

That was a joke. There was a discussion about that pedantic, convoluted description to justify outlandish pricing. And as you said, quite ridiculously— it worked.

The point being the market for these watches is over-inflated, over-hyped and over-the-top?

Maybe I have...

Apologies if I missed the context.

I guess the question is, if Phillips can achieve these prices, does it really have any impact on the rest of the market?

These, whilst not particularly rare case references, are relatively rare dial variants. How many have you seen in the last year? I guarantee you will find more “rare” Submariners, Speedmaster’s or Daytona for sale. I would expect to see these usually sell, on eBay or through a “normal” auction house, for somewhere between $1000-$2000 (depending on condition).

That said, I think everyone in their right mind agrees that these estimates and prices achieved are ludicrous. If Phillips can get these figures and their buyers are happy, fair play to them. I don’t think many people in the world could.

Perhaps this speaks more about Phillips buyers, rather than the real world value of these watches?

And on a related note, if the watch somehow does sell for anywhere near the low estimate, I would like to offer some other nice, vintage watches to the winning bidder at fabulous, discounted prices. 😁
The trouble with Phillips is to get them to sell your watches....

Haha, I was just about to say the same thing! I remember the newly joined Dan S in April but almost 2000 posts within 6 months has brought something new. I dig it!
