Just saw an attractive speedy 3590.50 that caught my eye, has great patina and is unpolished but i see rust on the inside ring of the bezel and a few rust marks around the lugs and pusher/crown area. Anything to be worried about? i know there won't be much i can do about the pitting but is it necessary to assume it will continue rusting? movement looks clean though.

Rust? Are you sure? I can't see any at all.

Maybe some crud around the crystal. Have you asked the seller?

For me the bigger concern would be the corrosion signs around the case back gasket area visible in the second to last image, bearing in mind you don't know what lurks underneath that gasket also. These sorts of issues could be perfectly acceptable if it was a few decades older and/or cheaper, but on a 1995 watch for me it's one to walk away from. In a sense it's a stereotypical dealer watch, it looks pretty but underneath there are signs it's pretty tired.

These aren't rare watches, so there are plenty of others to chose from. 70s Speedmasters can still be had for $2.5k or less if you keep looking, that's where I'd be headed. Good luck with your search.

    1. I think that's crud, not rust. And it has the tritium dial, which IMO is much more desirable than luminova. If it is rust, Kirill will take it back.
    2. Older Speedmasters are MORE expensive, not less. If you can find a nice 70's Speedmaster for $2,500, you're a better searcher than me.

thanks for all the input, i guess this is just one of the joys of buying older watches but i do think the pricing seems fair and i know kirill is a standup guy so have no hesitations buying from him.

I guess i would have to ask if that is rust or just crud on the watch as it is fairly new to have rust issues.

All we can do really is share opinions with OP here. Mine is that there are signs of rust of the caseback, and I'd 100% walk away from it given it's only ~20 years old. If you like it, more power to you, but take a another look at the photo cicindela posted above.

This was an open auction and ended a couple of weeks ago so as good a reflection of the market as any other http://www.ebay.com/itm/232016672496Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
I picked up a super clean 78ST myself around 6 months ago for £1.6k with original 1171. No luminova on sight in either :D
They're out there, just not on dealer websites granted.
