LeCoultre Futurematic Cal. 497: Dial Authenticity Check

Looking for some input from the group on this LeCoultre Futurematic (cal. 497, gold-filled case). Movement looks correct and honest, but I’m unsure about the dial. The overall layout is right, though the printing—especially the “SWISS” at 6 o’clock and some of the text weight—gives me pause when compared to other known originals. I’d appreciate experienced eyes weighing in. Thanks in advance.

There is a lot of crystal distortion there, so 'swiss' is tough to tell.

I've got one uncased in my repair queue right now. In a bit rougher shape, but very similar to the one above, and in, what I believe to be, authentic shape.

Thank you. Yes, it does look like yours, and you're right Maybe it's just the crystal distortion I will ask for better pictures. They're asking 1350 which is a bit high
I was thinking more like 1100 if decent timegraph numbers.

I definitely see the difference in swiss from the pictures, but I don't have enough experience on the differences of course.

I don't have a good feel for the value. TBH, I perhaps overpaid for mine ($900) as a barely-runner/losing a few mins a day. One thing to note: see if you can get them to 'wear' it for a bit to get it to 'charge' up near the top of the gauge. Also, see how 'low' the charge can get before it stops working. Mine won't run until ~11 on the dial, I suspect, if in good shape, it should still run pretty low into the red on the gauge.

I've got one that's a definite redial which I've posted here before and it runs well, and I probably also overpaid at 900 as well. I'm just trying to find one with an original dial. Thx again

yes, that's a great idea.Thank you for the advice
TBH, you might consider finding a replacement dial. I see a ton of them on Ebay for sub-$200 (depending on the condition you want, as low as $10!).

This one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/176276991272
Looks like the one in OP, same 'swiss'.

This one is quite attractive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/175729521847?

Sad about the outside 'wear' though.

One oddity (among many) of the US market LeCoultre Futurematics is that all cal. 497 dials will fit all cal. 497 cases, and almost all possible combinations of dial and case were used by LeCoultre.

A cal. 8X7 porthole dial and movement set will also fit all the cases for the U.S. watches.

Buying an original dial for these is not nearly as difficult as getting one for a far more common model line like an Omega Seamaster.

Thanks Gator Great watch..very unique..think that's what makes it so fascinating. I mean, I can just imagine somebody walking into a store in the 1950s and buying it off-the-shelf for about 100 dollars.

Great quedtion:
Found this in chat:
Yes - Wadsworth cases were widely used for U.S. market watches, especially in the early–mid 20th century.
pocketwatchdatabase.com
They supplied American watch brands (Hamilton, Elgin, Waltham, Illinois, etc.) and even some imported watches that were cased domestically.

I think there's also an omega form discussion which may have commented on tjis question in the past
