I'll start (generic pics - pretty much the first that showed up in google):

    BIG DATE:

Give me a decent date disc (@ 6, preferable) rather than that asymmetric hole with a number in it) every day of the year ... A simple date-disk also avoids the whole "asymetric digit or leading 0?" problem for the first 1/3rd of the month

    :cautious:

    MOONPHASE CALENDER:

what does it measure and why is it important? (how do you read it anyway? the moon is on the above photo either 12, 13 or 14 days old)

Eventually this complication can be used to monitor the menstrual cycle? donno ?

    any pet peeves of you?

I think GMT is grossly undervalued by anyone that has never had one.

    My pet peeves.

Power level complications on non complicated watches, what's the point if you don't even have a date wheel? Plus I think they off balance dials. Although this JLC pulls it off well and does not destroy the dial.

Please tell me how that makes that VC better, yes it has a day settings, but come on, your either going to keep it wound or not, the power reserve is meaningless and screws up the balance of the dial.

24hour non GMT subdials... Um thanks I know which 12 hours I am in... On a side note this is 100% ok on a 1655 explorer because I said so... and I want that watch with all of its readability problems and non gmt hand.

esoteric worthless complications...( Yes I know rarer then hens teeth but they exist)
Sidereal time.. yes I need a 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.0916 second day thank you.
Equation of time... Yes I need to know the true solar time that means nothing to anyone else for the place I set it, as a bonus this does not work during daylight savings time as most of these only allow +/- 15 minutes.

My Patek 5726 has a day/night indicator (stuck to the moon phase) for the time zone I'm in ...( only one time zone on this watch)... saves me the bother of, what? Looking out of the window to see if it's night or day ? ::confused2::

Whoa there, al128! Some of us fogies LOVE the big date windows idea. Been toying with getting one myself. It might be the MOST useful complication for the 50+ watch nerds.

I've found the most useless complication is a second hand. ;):D

Omg I hate the three date windows. Ruins readability and it's not like you don't know the next day!!

In defense of the light/dark notifier. It's small and does help set the time on a date complication watch, at least they are normally unobtrusive.

Nah, Dennis you could never get beyond the stylised arse-crack in the middle of the big date window. :whipped:

Oh you haven't "seen" that before? Well now you do ...

    ... forever :D

Oh, I'm aware of the divider bar - but there are several companies that don't use them. For instance.....

To be honest, I'd guess pretty much all chronograph functions are unused for practical purposes by 99% of owners 99% of the time. Oh, and setting a chrono running just to see all the hands turning does not count as "practical". The bezels on most diver's watches fall into the same category. I would suggest the same about tachy/tele bezels (whether DON or not).

Useful but less common complications to me are practical ones like reasonably accurate alarms or something like the Gruen Airflight. Then again, those that know me do say I dance to the beat of a different drum..........

You made me google gruen airflight . ;)

Cool watch, I could so see this complication be enhanced for GMT (press and hold button to see 2nd timezone)...

I like how it says DATUM next to the datum, and MOONPHASE next to the - ahem - moonphase.

No need to ship the watch with a user's manual...::stirthepot::

Couldn't agree more. I am not 50 plus yet but a big date is very appealing especially when they look like these.

I get your point about the Moonphase but "Damn, don't they look purdy?"

I love that watch in pictures. ::love:: Tried it on and hated it. :( Too much open dial at 39mm. Would have been the perfect watch if it were 37mm.

@LouS & @Wetworks were there - I think it was the Timekeepers show in NYC. Tommy saw that killer Lange and Lou introduced me to a sweet modern El Primero that had a very vintage feel to it.

    Tide complication is surprisingly underrated...

Spoken as someone who's had to carry many heavy boats up slippery, dead jellyfish slime covered boat ramps as a result of coming in at low tide rather than high.

I'm getting up there in age and I have a son with some vision issues so BIG DATES are nice to have.

I have only seen it in pictures also, will have to try one on somewhere, good to know. I was contemplating either the JLC or the Lange at some point. May I ask what the El Primero was, a Rainbow Flyback is also on the radar but a more vintage one may be more appealing.
