Does anyone know if there are anyone sells large scale models of movements that you can build at home? I am pretty clumsy And don’t necessarily want to buy watch maker tools, but would fancy building a scaled up 30t2 or similar to start to increase understanding. I have seen some build your own watch kits but would be more interested in a scaled up model.
One of these you might find satisfying. https://wooden-gear-clocks.com I built one a while back and while it was fun to put together, as a timekeeper it was crap. But I also bought a "cheap" kit.
Saw something of the sort years ago. A much simpler historical design. It was meant for use on a farm. The mechanism was almost all wooden. It was powered by pully system, you raised a long heavy lever to get it going. As the clock ran the weight of the lever pulled against a heavy counterweight. To adjust the timing there was a sliding weight on the lever, or add or subtract weight at either end of the drive train. Apparently the farmer would raise the lever at sunrise and it ran all day. I think it only counted hours not minutes. I had considered trying to build one, but couldn't find a large enough open space on any of my walls, it took up about six square feet, at least none that could be easily reached to raise the lever without moving heavy furniture back and forth.
John Harrison’s clock was made of wood, so these kits are a bit of a gesture to the past too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harrison
